The current population of this country is more than 10% higher than the current population of Azerbaijan, at least according to the Wikipedia page I linked to.

The large dip in the graph looks like it is related to a well-known event, although I am surprised that it began when it did - it looks a couple of years early to me. I think my understanding of this event and its background must be, at a minimum, incomplete.

I didn't look at the Wikipedia link, I was just guessing based on "it does have a bit of a lakeshore on the one side".

Given the timing of the dip - is the graph the population of Rwanda?

We have a winner! I pinched it from this page.

I'm not sure why it begins so early, though. The whole thing must have been less sudden than I thought. (Or maybe the graph's just wrong.)

Checking Rwanda on Google maps shows that more or less it's entire eastern border is a lake shore, too. I didn't know that.

If we're playing a graph identifying game, then what does this show?

(I'll accept an answer which does not account for the different colours, by the way).

Annual maximum ozone hole size?

When I right-clicked on the picture and selected the "Bild in neuem Tab öffnen" option, the name of the file was very prominently displayed near the top of the browser window. Might want to change the file name :)

That would involve putting the file somewhere else on t'interweb and I'm not convinced I can be arsed doing that. Maybe we should introduce a rule that "Bild in neuem Tab öffnen" ist verboten.

We could, but it should be advertised. I wasn't trying to cheat, I simply failed to anticipate events would unfold as they did . . .

That would take the fun out of cheating

Yes, I also failed to anticipate that.

This one doesn't provide the answer in similar circumstances, so I offer it to the game instead.

For those who haven't checked - the previous graph showed the number of new exoplanets discovered per year. The colours indicated the various detection methods.

Hmm. Might be some economic measure. I'm guessing it's not a population.

It's neither population nor economic, although what's charted undoubtedly has an effect on both.

Definitely getting closer, although I don't think it's environmental as such.

Nothing to do with computers. However, the apparent increase in more recent times is due to an improvement in technology*.

*Either mainly or entirely, I'd be interested to hear folks views on that when the answer is given.

Seems like an improvement in technology should result in a decrease in pollution, so that's probably not the right idea.

"apparent" increase? So this quantity is measured with substantial error then? (Some error that either increases or decreases as technology improves.)

It's more that it's something that we're better able to measure nowadays.

So we can measure it better, and there's more of it nowadays. Not because there really is more, but because it was always there, and we just didn't see it.
