Fair point:

Population of the Soviet Union until 1991, of her successor states (off the top of my head, Russia, Belorassia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Kasachstan, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kirgysztan, Tajikistan, Turkmenia - some of whom formed the CIS, Commonwealth of Independent States) thereafter?

OTOH, it could be the population of the Russian Soviet Repuclic before 1991, and the Russian Republic thereafter.

Not unless there are an awful lot of Russians we don't know about, or the units on the vertical axis are not in millions. Russian supposedly peaked in 1991 at just under 150 million. The transfer of Crimea to Ukraine in 1954 would probably have been big enough to be detectable in a graph, unless the graph were adjusted to exclude Crimea prior to that time. "Russia" also used to be a lot bigger, with much of its territories ultimately transferred to other Soviet republics, although most of this took place before 1950.

Red = population of Soviet Union, Solid Blue = population of Soviet successor states (the fourteen listed above, and Moldova), Dashed Blue = same as solid blue, but projected.

OK, this was discussed very briefly and in passing elsewhere, and it makes a point. The second graph elaborates on the first using the same data. Medicine again.

In the second graph, the two different colours of the graph only represent different kind of estimates, so you can just ignore that.

There will be some school children among these numbers, but that's not the point.

The data are from Germany, and are published by the Robert-Koch-Institut.

The way the dates are on the bottom one made me think of the school year. Is that part of it?

That's a coincidence. I think the numbers are just there to bring order to 12 narrowly-spaced units.

Also the school year is variable in Germany :)

No. Google Robert Koch. An the Robert-Koch-Institut.
There is a loose connection between the subject of the graph and vaccines. A vaccine.

I had already noted the obvious seasonality, and had thought about influenza cases before the "cough cough".

Neither diagram shows influenza cases, but the disease plays a role here.

Nonono, the numbers/lines represent somthing, and what they express has something to do with influenza. I just said that theis graph doesn't show the number of influenza cases.

No, no, not that one. It was where I wrote that it is frustrating to have him die of the flu, and you saying that you didn't think it was "just" the flu. These graphs are supporting my pioint that it could bloody well only have been the flu. O:)
