:D

We already covered influenza.

Another hint: The arrows represent the time when a major prophylactic measure was introduced.

So, we've got a viral STD, the instance of which has been recently curtailed due to the introduction of a prophylactic measure. All the while, it usually isn't as bad as it's made out to be.

We've ruled out herpes and HIV (I'm assuming since AIDS wasn't accepted - plus, this doesn't hold with the 'not as bad as it sounds' clue).

HPV?

My reading of the clue was that it is worse than it sounds, just not as bad as malaria.

MMDandy, where did we say STD?

If you want to melodramatic, you could call it a genocidal disease, you Yankees you.

 You didn't. The word "prophylactic" in these parts is strongly associated with the prevention of STDs and pregnancy, and I made the leap before considering how you would use the term. And as for the rest of it - I claim a sever case of carelessness.

Hmmm, measles and polio are already scratched.

Or a lighter case of not knowing American English very well.

O.M!F!!G!!!

Measles it is - I had to scroll back to see that Lianachan nailed it long ago. Cripes!

The graph shows the number of measles cases (not deaths) in the US since 1950. The first arrow is the intriduction of the first vaccine, the second arrow is the introduction of a second immunization .
The word "genocidal" referred to the fact that apparently, measles played a large factor in the collapse of the Native American populations after the arrival of the Europeans.

Sorry for the blunder, everyone, you were a most astounding crowd of quizzers. Next round of drinks is on me, and Lianachan has to present the next graph.

Still, I'd suspect the X-axis carries years. Something had a first peak at 10 to the 6 whatever in the times of the Roman Empire and then really took off with the industrial revolution.

Wild-assed guess: Something to do with mining?

Nothing to do with mining, but the first part of your post is spot on. If only you could identify that "something"...

Nope - Arneb was almost there. It's a simple count and the earlier hump is related to the Roman Empire.

I'd love to see an actual graph of that, would be pretty interesting! But this one's nothing as complicated as that.

It is indeed a population over time. Population of where, though?
