Something to do with economic measures.
A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

If you are seeing an apparent paradox, that means you are missing something.

Well, the quantity measured over time certainly has an economic aspect to it. But the vertical axis is not in units of any financial currency.

1961 was the year of my birth and up to certain points the track is similar to my height or weight, but not into the 1980s.
Get it up ye.

The part of the graph that takes a dive, does so sooner than I thought it would.

I'd need to check who retired/died, but it's certainly possible....

Well, that would definitely affect the shape of the curve.

But a birth rate is a rate of change - this is not the change, it is the level.

I was thinking it could be something like the number of babies born each day in China or something

Well, something like that. It's cumulative, though. When the baby is born, it stays in the count, until it dies. Or leaves.

Not that one. 193 possibilities left! (Or maybe a few more, depending on how you define "country".)

Definitely smaller (in area) than the median country, although bigger than a few dozen others. Above the median country in population at this time.

Not an island in the ocean, but it does have a bit of a lakeshore on the one side.

The vertical axis would be in thousands, so it's getting close to 8.5 million towards the end there, in 2003. Substantially higher now - between 0.1% and 0.2% of the world's population lives there.
