ETA: I admit, this is a subtle one, and the rather striking difference in the appearance of the sky between the two photos makes it harder.

No, only two weeks. Which explains why the second photo is a lot worse in terms of "pretty pictures": The Moon ruined the sky in the second image.

It may take a bit or research.

You may recognize a well-known asterism at one of the edges of the image. That may lead you to the constellation which (almost in its entirety) displayed in the photo. THEN you might look for things that are interesting in that constellation.

Or something like that. The photos were taken on 14 Feb and 2 March. The full Moon was rising on the opposite horizon when the second photo was made, which makes the important difference harder to spot.

OKOK, the tight grouping of stars on the left is the Pleiades, and the constellation shown is Perseus.

The second photograh shows a minimum of Algol. It's quite tricky to pick up the minima, which are short, and it's not easy to photograph, especially in late winter/early spring when a low position in the Northern sky, longer light hours and rotteh German weather all conspire against you. The son did it for a school project, with a camera mounted on a tripod. Algol is towards the lower middle of the two photos, in the upper right corner of the little quadrangle of stars. It clearly outshines its neighbours in the first photo (with the plane track), but not in the other one.

Yeah, the project is cool. He was asking me about something astronomical to do, and of the four things I offered (Algol, documenting an entire month of Moon phases, catching an opposition loop of a planet, filming the eclipse of Aldebaran on March 19), he chose the most iffy and difficult.

All true observations, but of varying relevance. No cigat yet.

The maps depict the German Landkreise (counties/parishes/what ave you) and Landkreis-independent cities, if you were wondering.

The East - West split is clearly defined so it has to be current (or late C20th), neither looks right for Protestant/Catholic. The brownest area is Saxony but I doubt it shows ethnic Saxons. Political parties?

Political parties play a role. The data are current, 2017.

No. It's not that bad in Saxony; the collapse of the GDR industries had its advantages (but the southeast was never very industrial anyway).

As I said, there is a population theme here (though not concerning the population at large), and it is also about political parties. Or rather, a political party.
