It was an Ottoman province, or part of one. It was certainly referred to as Iraq in Britain.

OK, so it could be related to any one of several incidents over a > 100 year period then.

So many possibilities . . .

Heid the Ba' wrote:We have been to Iraq so often it isn't funny. Churchill in the Great War? about General Townsend and Kut? Google that if you think the more recent Gulf Wars were clusterfucks.

Huh. In that case, it would seem Tony Blair missed a splendid opportunity to get the Iraqis all angry at the Americans instead of the UK. (Well the first part appears to have been highly successful, but not the second.)

We have a winner!

I was on some website gathering his quotes, and I must say that the guy is remarkable. He really got the hang on combining the traditional Soviet mix of lies and distorted semi-truths with the modern glib politician media savviness. Awesome PR.

Ooh, that's a bit courageous for him - I would have thought that would have begged for a counter-jibe regarding Afghanistan in the 1980s. Of course, an Afghanistan counter-jibe might itself be subject to a counter-counter-jibe, depending on who delivers the counter-jibe.

He'd no doubt retorted with something on the currently downwinding Afghan campaign by evil old NATO, delivered elegantly off the cuff. The guy is definitely not a weakling oligarch puppet (like Yanucovich was), he is very very much on top of his game.

Political leaders still think things can be done through force, but that cannot solve terrorism. Backwardness is the breeding ground of terror, and that is what we have to fight.

Well, since we are getting used to hear quotations from people you wouldn't associate with their own quotes, I am going to make a bold move:

Good guess, but no.

I'm not sure if he would be expected to say something like this or not - the quote comes from a 2008 interview, quite some time after he had much influence in the world.

Yeah, I would have guessed he saif that in a TIME interview some years before the infamous 2000 election, when he was all about constructive compassionate, conservatism. You know, something to sound thoughtful in order to give a good impression to East Coast libruls.

OK, 2008. So probably no significant politician of the time, no religious leader (these wouldn't ever ask for more modernism), and probably not someone who just took part in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars (if it wasn't Don Rumsfeld otr Dick Cheney - although they would be capable of such blatant cynicism. Easily).

Not Hillary, no?

I found this to be very helpful.

Had my guess been wrong, my next guess would have been James Earl Carter.

Oh, I think Tim Curry did a heck of a job in The Three Musketeers (1993).
