Who said it? Use of Google or other search tools automagically disqualifies you.

The government will make use of these powers only insofar as they are essential for carrying out vitally necessary measures...The number of cases in which an internal necessity exists for having recourse to such a law is in itself a limited one.

Wow, "automagically" does not offend the spellchecker here. "Automagic" does, though.

Not correct, although this thread is turning out the way I hoped!

The author of this quote is someone who had a very profound influence on the circumstances of my birth and early life, and yours as well.

OK, let's try supervillains - of the three biggies, Hitler, Stalin, Mao, the latter wouldn't have had much influence on your and my early life. Judging from style, it sounds more like Stalin than Hitler. Hitler was always straightforward about his brutality, slinking along a "we are doing almost nothing" line wouldn't have been the way hes said things.

So yeah, Uncle Joe, describing the institution of the GULag?

Adolfo, about the Ermächtigungsgesetz. But, I need to research the authenticity of this - not everything I pinch from a website is always true. Particularly politically-oriented websites.

It also says Hitler

pledged to promote peace with France, Great Britain and the Soviet Union.

Oops

Well, he had been the Kanzler for just over seven weeks; maybe he was a little more cautious in his speech at first.

Mine are on, I don't know if I recognised it or guessed but Hitler was my first thought.

OK, another really easy one:

"In this field, almost everything is already discovered, and all that remains is to fill a few unimportant holes."

Einstein? A not entirely serious quote?

I understand the quote as intended in all seriousness, but seriously, even comically, wrong. No, Einstein didn't say it, nd neither did an archaeologist.

Not Newton, either. But the "subject" is indeed, physics.

Seriously, folks. Do you think that any of the truly great physicists would have said that ?

OK, it was said by a respected physicist to a great physicist, although they didn't know that at the time.

Was one of them Chandrasekhar? If so, was the respected physicist Eddington?

No, not them.

I'd count Eddington among the great ones.

The quote is older than this pair.

Now you're just starting to throw names around...

Planck is correct. His academic teacher, Philipp von Jolly, seeing Planck was a bright kid, tried to dissuade him from going into physics with these words. Planck answered he would be content understing things as they were, even if that meant not discovering new things. Well...

Lianachan, you're up
