Well, the first War of the Machines seems to be drawing to its final inconclusive chapter — leaving, alas, everyone the poorer, many bereaved or maimed and millions dead, and only one thing triumphant: the Machines. As the servants of the Machine are becoming a privileged class, the Machines are going to be enormously more powerful. What's their next move?

This could be from the first treatment for Terminator. But I'll venture George Orwell.

George Orwell is also good, but not right. Everybody is definitely barking up the right tree.

It was in a letter to his son Christopher (30 January 1945), published as number 96 in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. Good book that, offers loads of insights into the man himself and to Middle-Earth. Not the sort of thing Peter Jackson would ever have been interested in.

Then I based my guesses on a completely incorrect premise. Wouldn't the first "war of machines" have been WWI? It sounded like it had to be from a Sci Fi/Fantasy writer but I'd have bet much earlier. There was line about war with machines in The Time Machine (which I just recently watched again) which is what made me thing H. G. Wells.

If it was said in '45, I'd change my guess to Asimov. Well, except for that "already got it" thing.

Give me a bit to find something...

Okay, here we go:

Science, my lad, is made up of mistakes, but they are mistakes which it is useful to make, because they lead little by little to the truth.

Except for "my lad", this could be the standard Phil Plait stump speech.

Could've been said by the guy who started the Bullshit Game.

But I'll vote for some scientist like Carl Sagan.

Not really a scientist. A few generations before Feynman or Sagan (or Plait).

So I haven't really played this game before. How does it work? Do I give more clues or just wait for you guys to keep guessing?

Judgement call really, based on how we seem to be doing. Not really a scientist? Some kind of antiquarian?
