Good answer but not him. Like both the last two guesses our man changed his name.

Incompatible with "still alive".

Hmm. Perhaps Cassius Clay?

They use that word all the time here. Singaporeans, Malaysians, Burmese, Thai, Vietnamese - they all use it.

Ah, ok. Do they mainly learn American English? Judging from the people I've met via my brother, I'd guess so. Anyway, use of the word "haters" on t'internet is a clear indication to me that I'm dealing with a moron of some description, and probably an American.

The answer would be different for different countries on my list. Singapore tends to be more Commonwealth English; Vietnam strikes me as more American-influenced. All of these places seem to pick up a certain amount of American influence from television/films though.

Great God! this is an awful place and terrible enough for us to have laboured to it without the reward of priority. Well, it is something to have got here, and the wind may be our friend tomorrow. Now for the run home and a desperate struggle. I wonder if we can do it.

A physicist? Einstein is too obvious so Bohr?

Bohr is correct. He mistrusted physical realism, and physicists nowadays, used to the tough ways of the American elite University system love to shoot down his thoughts on complementarity, the measuring process and the loss of determinism. They love to quote, with an acrid tone, a joke that his loving pupils once made, that he only knew two mathematical symbols, << and ≈. He's got a bad press these days.

On to you, Heid.

I'll offer Sallustius instead. I remember his writings as awfully pompous, hyper-conservative and sanctimonious.

But then again, if it's a nice quip in Latin, it's probably Cicero, so my money is on Lianachan.
