As an afterthought:
4 November, 1995 - Yithak Rabin is shot dead in Jaffa, by an Israeli identifying with the radical settler movement.

I know it is problematic to tie history to "great people", but I do have a suspicion that the Middle East might be a better place today were it not for that murder.

A few days late but 4th Nov 1962 the US conducted it's last atmospheric nuclear test. Protection seemed to involve either taking your kids outside to watch or standing under it shirtless wearing a hard hat.

Some really nice images on that site. The early attitudes to protection are a bit weird. I put it to you that these guys are walking in the wrong direction.

November 9th, 1809 - death of Paul Sandby. A highly regarded English landscape artist, he's best known to me as the chief draughtsman of Roy's Military Survey of Scotland. While doing that, and before he was a landscape artist proper, he occasionally painted landscapes up here. These, like the example of his painting of Fort Augustus below, are invaluable for folk like me who specialise in the period he worked in. You can see the old barracks, long gone, the "new" barracks (almost entirely gone) and the extent and location of both the village of the time and the British army camps.

Good work Llama parents.

11.11.18 My maternal grandfather, the man I am named after, no doubt took a deep breath and thanked FSM that he had made it. He had gone to Flanders in 1915 and served more than three years as a stretcher bearer in combat zones, ending the war in Italy.

Congrats to him for the opportunity to enrich the human gene pool with Heid the Ba'

My (IIRC) paterno-maternal grandfather died in that War, on the first day of combat, on the Eastern front. From the point of evolution, it seems, he was expendable as he had already procreated. That's not how his wife and kids saw it.

It is unfortuanate that the losers of wars don’t get to honour their losses the way the winners do. Arneb’s great grandfather (if I have that correct) was a man simply trying to do his bit for his country, the same as my ancestors.

November 13th, 1002 - the St. Brice's Day massacre, as King Æthelred the Unready orders the killing of all Danes in England. Backfires spectacularly, and sets in motion the sequence of events that ends with Knútr (Cnut) being crowned King of England in 1016.

November 20th, 1820 - American whaler Essex is attacked and sunk by a sperm whale, leading to a lengthy ordeal featuring all of the ship-wreck cliches (including cannibalisation in open boats) for the crew, plus the bastardisation of events into Moby Dick.
