There is no trace of the old church, the new one is C19th. Some sources say the old church was 60m to the west which would put it smack in the middle of this pub, rather than Greggs. The pub has sticky carpets and an overpowering smell of the toilets, I have no idea why anyone would drink there but it is quite popular.

[Amusing Dumfries aside] My younger brother's first marriage took place in Greyfriars, and the bride to be sobbed inconsolably for much of the service. The marriage went about as well as you might expect. I have been best man at three weddings and all the marriages have crashed and burned. [/Amusing Dumfries aside] Actually not that amusing when I write it down.

Amusing to read, though.

February 14th, 273. Death of Valentius, the patron saint against fainting, and of affianced couples, beekeepers, happy marriages, love, plague and epilepsy.

The association between love and plague is really really Catholic, don't you think?

30 years ago today (shortly before midnight UTC), light from the supernova SN 1987A, an atypical Type II (core collapse) supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud, reached Earth. It was preceded by a flurry of 11 (!) neutrino detections a few hours earlier. The predecessor star, Sanduleak 69°202, seemed an unlikely SN candidate, as it had not yet reached res supergiant stage and was still a blue giant; everything went so fast its core collapsed even before it had time to properly swell into red giant stage.

The SN is still a hot research topic 30 years later.

I remember that from the time. Was excellent.

Feb 24th 1303 - the Battle of Roslin, Scotland v England. Result: home win! Victory for the good guys, despite being outnumbered more than four to one!

Important notice, even if one day late:

Ten years ago yesterday, on 3 March, 2007 a poster known as St. Jimmy started a thread in the Baba O'Reilly section of the the internet forum oof Illuminati-R-Us.com in which he gave himself and his fellow posters the task to count down from 1,000,000 to zero by counting down one in every post. He was met with skepticism and a certain regard for the silliness of the task set. The rest, as they say, is history.

March 21st, 1944: Operation Carthage. The RAF bomb a building in Copenhagen that's being used as a Gestapo headquarters. With the kind of accuracy normally associated with transpondean bombing, they also bomb a school a mile away, killing 86 children and 18 adults (mostly nuns).

All the more reason for me to find it Very Strange Indeed that Scots (or at least a significant part of Scots) want to dissolve the union of parliaments, but not the union of crowns.
