On April 29, 1975, operation Frequent Wind began. This refers not to the 2016 US election campaign (which possibly did begin in 1975), but to the evacuation of Saigon.

On April 30th 1945, Adolf Hitler shot himself, possibly to avoid being put on display as Benito Mussolini had two says previously.

On April 30th, 1975, a tank crashed through the gates of the Presidential Palace of South Vietnam. President Minh, who had assumed office two days previously, was, by various reports, waiting on the steps of the palace or in the conference room.

July 1, 1863: The Battle of Gettysburg begins. That largest battle of the American Civil War and the turning point for the North.

Personal Note: And tomorrow will be the anniversary of the Defense of Little Round Top, where Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain did one of the ballsyiest things I have ever heard of. If you don't know about this, look it up if you like war stories.

So quite literally, he brought a knife to a gun fight? And won? That is a rare feat indeed.

If you haven't seen it, the movie Gettysburg is very good and covers this story well.

28 years ago today, Iran Air 655, a passenger flight en route from Bandar-Abbas to Dubai, was shot down by the United States Navy guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes. All 290 on board, including 66 children and 16 crew, died. The attack took place in Iranian airspace, over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf while the plane was on its usual path.

Perhaps worth an entry in "A life well lived"? I have only just read the link and didn't know his connection to Bowdoin College, I have seen his museum but it was shut when I was there. I have a friend who studied there and visited once.

That wasn't a "defence", it was a clear explanation of the very good reasons to shoot down that plane. These weren't "children", they were underage terrorists, if you please.
