It was subsequently damaged badly in the nuclear war that ended the dominance of humans, and allowed for the rise of the apes.

June 17, 1953: A short-lived workers's uprising demanding lesser work-quotas, and free and fair elections in the German Democratic Republic is brutally put down by Soviet tanks and troops. The Soviet reaction made it very clear who was in charge and that no attempt at gaining freedom would be tolerated by the oppressor.
