Return of the Stone of Destiny or not. I don't know Lianachan's view but it is not something I take much interest in being a republican.

Twenty seconds and counting. Fifteen seconds, guidance is internal. Twelve, eleven, ten, nine, ignition sequence start, six, five four, three, two one, zero, all engine running. Liftoff, we have a liftoff, thirty-two minutes past the hour. Liftoff of Apollo Eleven. Tower cleared.

What a marvelous moment in history. I remember, at 11 years old, being glued to the TV for days. I miss how I felt then.

Indeed. I was on holiday so was aware of it, but didn't really see any of it. The time difference didn't help. In the past I was convinced I watched the Moon landing live but I'm really not sure I did.

Edit: 3.56am here, so I almost certainly did not watch it live.

No memories from my side (I vaguely remember the Apollo-Soyuz test project and, of course, the Will-It-Hit-Germany-And-Kill-Us-All Skylab craze). My memories start with Siegmund Jähn going up to Salyut-6 and STS-1 Columbia, which was decidedly less glamorous.

There is nothing like a Saturn V waking up. The S4Bs that they used later for near Earth stuff paled in comparison.

My brother-in-law was in a punk band called "The Wayward Skylabs" which were every bit as good as you would expect a small town punk band to be.

20 July, -

1944: A group of officers make an attempt at Hitler's life, in Wolfsschanze, East Prussia. Several of his close military circle are killed, but he survives, probably because a leg of the massive map table protects him from shrapnel. More than thousand people are given death sentences in the aftermath. But you know all that, because you saw Tom Cruise do it.

1969: Contact light! OK, engine stop. ACA out of detent. Mode control, both auto. Descent engine command override off. Engine Arm off. 413 is in. - Housten, uh. Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed. - Roger, Twan... Tranquility, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue, we're breathing again, thanks a lot.

As a contrast to the rather noble efforts of Juli 20:

Juky 22, 2011, the day of the murderous attacks in Oslo and on the island of Utøya. 77 people were killed - eight by a bomb blast in front of the Prime Minister's offices, 69 (!) more on the island, one by one, by single-handed gunfire. Most of these victims were aged 15 -20, they were on a holiday outing organzied by the Norwegian Social Democrats' youth organisation.

Busy day for Brexistan

1717 - You didn't know who Kurfürst Georg Ludwig von Hannover was right? Well, you know him now!
1747 - Agter the Second Jakobite Rising, wearing Kilt and Tartan is outlawed in Scotland
1800 - Signing of the Act of Union, creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Heads up, folks, it's only going to last for 121 years.

And here's one I can' get away from
1944 - Anne Frank makes the last entry into her diary.
