Believe me, the worst defeat of the Dutch Navy is much more embarrassing.

If it happened like that, sure. Is that version of events generally the accepted one? I'm an 18th C military guy, but very firmly for stuff in my own neck of the woods.

June 15th, 1919: First non-stop transatlantic flight.

June 15th, a bad day for royal types:

923 - King Robert I of France killed in battle.
1184 - King Magnús Erlingsson (Magnus V) of Norway killed in battle.
1246 - Frederick II, Duke of Austria, killed in battle.

June 18th, 1429: French victory against England at the Battle of Patay. However....
June 18th, 1815: French defeat to British, Prussians et al at the Battle of Waterloo.

I think, by and large, this is one where we can safely root for the English in retrospect.

I think Waterloo has enough for all of us. Much of the Allied army was Prussian, and even the "British" part had two divisions of Netherlanders, some Hannoverians, The King's German Legion and Scots both Highland and Lowland.

June 22, 1941 - Operation Barbarossa commences with a bombing of cities in the Soviet-occupied part of Poland, and artillery attacks on the entire eastern front. Most likely some of Мастер's relatives participated in this attack, although it's not always easy to tell, as many of them had these curious gaps in their CVs in the 1930s and 1940s.

Although this operation initially went badly for the Soviet Union, ultimately they prevailed, and the Soviet flag went up over the Reichstag on May 2, 1945. The Third Reich soon passed into history, Germany was occupied and ultimately divided for forty years, much of Europe was brought into the Soviet sphere, and many people were severely displaced. The latter profoundly affected the lives of people still not born for a few decades, including some IRU members.

Three days previously, Soviet archeologists had opened the tomb of Timur the Tartar in Uzbekistan. It is claimed that the tomb had an inscription,
When I rise from the dead, the world shall tremble.
and that inside the casket, there was a curse,
Whomsoever opens my tomb shall unleash an invader more terrible than I.

The curse worked.

Indeed it did. Ruddy archaeologists can't leave anything alone.

Me too, lifted that from wikipedia's "on this day" page. I assume it was done with nothing much more complicated than a hose, a funnel, and balls of steel.

I suspect so, holding a hose over the inlet which was no doubt near a red hot exhaust.

The Korean War started today in 1950.

In other bad news for The Greatest Country in the World T.M., General George Armstrong Custer had a Very, Very Bad Day T.M. at Little Bighorn on this day in 1876.

Didn't he just get a lot of bad press?
Particularly post-mortum.

He did get a lot of bad press, particularly post-mortum, but there are contemporary accounts of his being an arse. Anyway, he invaded Scotland and stole Berwick from us so Dick the Shit he remains.

June 28th, 1950 - first killings in the Bodo League massacre, which I'm ashamed to admit I'd not heard of.

I was aware of it, since the Korean War is one of my areas. Syngman Rhee was an arsehole who did many terrible things to his own people, but he was the good guy so we backed him.

On a cheerier note: 28th June 1985 Heid and The Mem married in this church and then got drunk in this hotel before staying overnight in this hotel. It hadn't occurred to me before but it appears the theme for our wedding was "red sandstone".
