Sorry to bother you again with my artsy stuff, but 150 years ago today, Tristan und Isolde, by Richard Wagner was first performed in Munich. If anything in the arts can be described as supernova, it's that performance. It is worth noting (in my dirty mind) that two (yes, two) conductors, Felix Mottl and Joseph Keilberth died while conducting the piece into the first explicitly composed interrupted orgasm in the history of music (Act 2).

June 10th 1719: Battle of Glenshiel, where the good guys and their Spanish friends were defeated by the British. Rob Roy, famous as a handsome Highland hero despite being an ugly bow legged crook and British spy, was seriously wounded in the battle. HERE is a British army map of the battle, drawn up shortly afterwards in 1719.

That reminds me of Bishop Ussher...

10 years ago today, the G8 ministers of Finance forgave debts worth 40 billion dollars to a number of developing countries.

June 12th 1944: A British Sunderland flying boat (RAF Sqdn 201) is shot down while attacking the German submarine U-333 in the Bay of Biscay. The submarine is badly damaged, having also been attacked by aircraft on both of the two previous days, forcing it to return to the U-boat pens in La Pallice (which feature in Das Boot and Raiders of the Lost Ark).

Oh, and:

June 12th 1940: Surrender of the 51st Highland Division in France. Almost everybody else had already left France previous week from Dunkirk, but Churchill insisted that the Highlanders stayed behind under French command. It's one of the reasons why everybody up here thinks he was a fucking arsehole.

Exactly ten years later, the Waratahs humiliate the Reds.

But wouldn't Michael Jackson's trial have been in occupied Mexico? It would already have been Jine 14th in much of the world.

[American superpatriot mode]I've never quite understood why the ROW has all those false time "zones". If ten a.m. is good enough for me, it's good enough for you out there. Do they have clocks where you come from? [/American superpatriot mode]

On 13 June, 1983, Motorola presented the first commercialy availale cell phone, the Dynatac 8000x.

You're DAMN right!

I couldn't have said it better myself. Heck, I even hate having to live in (well, near) Chicago. They think 11:00am is 10:00am. And they celebrate the turning of the New Year an hour late.

Oh, yeah, on this date...

Um...

Hungary celebrates Invertor's Day
