IQ test

I usually don't like click bait, because when I see a "Can you pass this geography test, most people can't?" i like geography, but the test is usually like 50 questions and each one needs a page refresh that takes forever. But this promised to be the world's shortest IQ test, so...

yeah it is dumb, but since I got all three right, I must be a freaking genium.

Before you get started, we’ll give you a quick hint: the questions might not be as easy as they first seem. A 2003 study found that students attending some of the nation’s most prestigious universities (including Harvard and Yale) failed to get all three of these questions correct; only 17 percent received a perfect score.

Think you have what it takes? Give it a shot! Here are the three questions:

1. A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

2. If it takes 5 machines 5 minutes to make 5 widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?

3. In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. Every day, the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half of the lake?

Spoiler:
Answers:

1. $0.05. If you guessed 10 cents, you’re not alone. However, if that were the case, the bat would cost $1.20—not $1.10. On the other hand, purchasing a 5 cent ball and a bat priced at $1.05 (which is $1 more expensive than 5 cents) would total $1.10, instead.

2. 5 minutes. Although you might have answered 100 minutes, the actual time is a little less than that. Since the question reveals that it would take 5 minutes for 1 widget machine to make 1 widget, you can determine that it would take 5 minutes for 100 widget machines to make 100 widgets.

3. 47 days. At first, your gut might tell you it would take 24 days. But remember: Since the area of the lake covered in lily pads doubles every day, a patch that covers half the lake would fully cover it in just one day. Subtract one day from 48 days, and what do you get? 47 days.

It's probably just harvesting email addresses for nefarious marketing purposes.

My dad liked trivia quizzes. he liked stumping me with them especially. One time he found a quiz with all trick questions: Do they have the Fourth of July in England too? I recognized they were tricks and so got them all rather than fall into the intended traps. He couldn't believe it didn't fool me.

I been a genius ever since.

A bar friend who was one smart cookie (he wrote learned treatises on the nature of matter, had some patents, etc) was discussing Mensa with me one night. His insight was Mensa was a group of people so smart they had figured out a way to extract $35 a year from its members. My personal genius has not yet risen to that level: I have no members, and no one sends me $35.

3 for 3. If the thing about only 17% attending top schools getting all 3 right isn't just BS, either many fell for the "trick questions" or were over-confident and didn't double check their work. I'll go with the BS explanation.

Bullshit for me, too. If you ever get an inch past the "oh, it's obvious" stage and actually calculate, you win. It's a bald lie.
