SciFi Chick

Postby Bill_Thompson » Thu May 11, 2006 8:30 pm

I thought I would start a thread to discuss Sci Fi Chick. Since I don't reallty know anything about her (?) I will stay quiet. I will just be an observer here at least for a while. I will be interested and see how this goes.

So Sci (may I call you Sci?) what kind of Sci-Fi do you like?
"Mars" is also a chocolate bar found on Earth. These are highly concentrated sources of carbohydrates, which are of vital importance to many carbon based life forms. Mars bars are slightly rippled with a flat underside. They are sometimes used in English courtship rituals in which the female performs various allegorical oral acts with the chocolate bar, which is donated by the male as part payment for this spectacle.

That's a new one. :D Most people go with SFC, but whatever floats your boat. :D

I like all sorts of scifi from hard stuff like Asimov to fantasy, and pretty much everything in between.

I've fallen behind in my pleasure reading of late due to school, but I'm certainly interested in any recommendations. Do you like scifi?

Have you read the "Princes of Amber" series by Roger Zelazny?

An excellent blend of fantasy and science fiction. While it's more on the fantasy side, it's still excellent. Roger Zelazny is my hero.

Do I like sci-fi? Does a bear - you know the rest. I am also way behind in my reading also. I started with Clark (City and the Stars) when I was a wee lad. Lately I am getting into alternate reality fiction (The Lost Regiment Series - right now I am trying to read 1632 in between work, kids, and life). Not too much into fantasy (got burned out with the Pern series) but I should go back and have a look at what it available now.

A sign of excellent taste on your part. The Amber series is what he is best known for, but my favorite Zelazny is without a doubt "Lord of Light".

Yes, Lord of Light is amazing. As are Zelazny's short stories.
And so I watch two new suns spin; our paper man doesn't call - burnt shadow printed on the road, now there's nothing there at all.

I like Zelazny too! I also enjoy Asimov, Niven, Clark...all the classics. There's nothing like good science fiction for a pure fun read.

It might be hard to find some of his older stuff right now, but I think I read somewhere that it's up for a reprinting soon.

I hope you people wake up.

Nothing I can say you will listen to thanks to the next person who will post right after me (Lonewulf) because he wants to defend the few women he knows of in his life.

But I think she is going to make this place a lot less interesting.

Shush, we're having a nice conversation about Zelazny.

But I think she is going to make this place a lot less interesting.

And you can see how we all respect your opinion.

I read the first book a couple decades ago, and I still remember it, but I've never had the chance to get to the others. Thanks for the reminder. :D

It's weird. I used to love Pern, but I can't read it now. I think it would make a better series of films than books, and it's not often I say anything like that.

I've never even heard of The Lost Regiment Series. Who's the author?

As for checking out fantasy, I recommend Melanie Rawn. I'm reading a trilogy by her that, ironically, involves dragons.

Oh, it gets great. Especially when it gets around to Merlin.

I don't spoil anything for you, but I'll just say: He makes a great character.

Well, the Princes of Amber series makes a ton of references to characters from the tale of Camelot. It's not much of a surprise.

Zelazny was very interested in those kinds of tales, but he loves to put his own "spin" on them. Like in the short story he wrote about Merlin and Mordrid getting together in modern times. Neither was a "nice guy" at all.

Ironically, in the Princes of Amber series, Merlin is a good guy... he's just young. A college student. :D
