Merkin Chase the Egg

Anyone watched the Merkin Chase the Egg final last night? The commentator in my favourite newspapaper went head over heels how good it was, including the half time show. Since I am unable at the moment to stay awake for the night and work the next day, so I passed the opportunity to practice some cultural exchange with our Great Protector.

I went to a private home for the Super Bowl Monday event.

For the half-time show, I suppose “great” is subjective.

For the competition itself, the outcome was in doubt until the very last moment.

The Philadelphia Beagles were behind by eight with quite limited time to go. Then they scored, which gets them within two. They then took the risky move of running the ball, instead of kicking it, for the extra point, which means it became an extra two points. All tied up.

Then one of the Kansas City Chefs had the ball, and it looked like he deliberately ran into touch just short of the try line. Although he didn’t provide any explanation for this action, one suspects that he wished to use up as much time as possible before scoring. Risky - six points, and probably seven, were virtually guaranteed here, but that would have left the Beagles a minute or so to score again. So the Chefs took the risk of not scoring at all, to run out the clock.

As it happens, the Chefs did score - but with a kick, so only three points. The Beagles then took possession, had time for one play, and threw a long, but incomplete pass.

Chefs win by three.

I completely missed that my lot titted something up and then let the bad guys equalise to even it up.

I missed the half time show, mostly on purpose.
Great game, including a superbowl record 65 yard punt return run. And quite a second half comeback by Mahomes, playing with a somewhat buggered up ankle.
At 27 yrs. old, he is now a two-time superbowl winner. I think he will end up enlarging the group of only four quarterbacks who have won more than two superbowls.

I didn’t know folks over the northern border gave a shite about the Super Bowl. Don’t you have various better, mainly frozen, sports of your own?

Aye, fairy nuff. I’m the one person in the world who’s never seen any Breaking Bad.

But, to mix my Fords, I’ve got a bad feeling about this:

No, you are not. +1, although I'd be up for a binge viewing if ever I had the time.

My impression was that American football is more popular in Canada than Canadian football is. I'm not sure how accurate that is.

I don't think I've heard of Canadian football. Is it American football, but in Canada, or a sport in it's own right like Australian football?

I can’t claim to be an expert, but what I know (or at least what I think I know) is that it’s similar to American football, but some differences.

Three “downs” instead of four - so harder to make the ten yards and get a new “first down”.

A field goal is four points instead of three.

A 110-yard pitch, with two 50-yard lines.

Ok, the four-point field goal is apparently not correct. Three points, just like American. Not sure where I got that.

And apparently twelve players on the field instead of eleven.

There are die hard CFL supporters in Canada, probably more so than NFL.
But honestly, the quality of play pales in comparison. The top CFL player would get a massive salary raise to go sit on the bench somewhere as a 4th stringer in the NFL.
