Country living

The deer are all around us, it is a very active time of year for them, not the least reason being that it is also deer season for hunters. Bow and arrow right now, firearms next month. Active deer means lots of car/deer accidents. They really do just appear like magic in front of you, no time to react. And whacking a deer at 70 mph will fuck up your car serious.

Anyway, there is a dead deer out back at the edge of the homestead, and it is getting ripe. The scent of rotting meat wafting oer the place when the wind is wrong.

The old lady reminds me from time to time. What is that tan thing out back? Dead deer? Yes. It really stinks. Yes. Is it still there? Yes.

A hunter would have followed a wounded doe and taken it. I figure this one was clipped on the road and made it this far back towards the woods and gave out. Poor deer.

Wet roads cause rain, Enzo?

Having eaten our tomato plants previously, the local deer have gone on to eat one of our peppers, and strip most of the leaves off our pumpkin. This was never a problem before the new owners of the pasture behind our house stopped letting people hunt. Though in fairness, it also was never a problem when we had a dog in the backyard, either.

On the plus side, I don't think anyone that I know has hit one this season.

Can't speak for Enzo, but my understanding is that the deer change their behavior when they are being hunted. I know for sure that African animals behave quite differently when approached by a vehicle in countries where hunting from vehicles is practiced, than in countries where it is not. . .

Yes, the deer get more skittish when folks start traipsing through the woods shooting at them. There's the traipsing, then there's the shooting, it is enough to make any deer want to change things. They they slap their little deer foreheads and say, "Doe! Can't buck the system."
