YAY!

For the first time in several days, the outside temperature displayed in my System Tray does not have a minus sign (-) in front of it.

It's down right balmy outside. Good. I have to go shovel the snow in the driveway this afternoon.

6 degrees here. Freezing, but not in the negatives.

Eat dirt, DS.

My 100 year old house is not so air tight, and I have had to thaw frozen pipes the last three days just to take a shower. Sux.

This thread made no sense to me until I realised you were taking about positive fahrenheit values. In the UK we have the odd habit of using Fahrenheit for hot temperatures (eg 85 degrees today) and Celsius for cold (eg just below freezing is -2). It doesn't make sense but almost eveyone does it.

Oh, heh, yeah. Over here we're all "F"ed up. It's always assumed to be Fahrenheit unless otherwise stated.

That is a rather odd habit :P

But, this is a Fahrenheit board. I posted a Celsius tempature of 30 or so once, and people thought I was complaining about how cold it was. . .

30 degrees would make no sense to most people here, in either scale. It would either be 86 or -2. I was discussing this at the weekend and the consensus seems to be a changeover at about 10 Celsius. Below that is C, above that F; so you leap from single digit C to 50 something F.

Offhand I can't recall the conversion formula but work with 0=32, 16=61 and 28=82. If I had any mathematical ability I ought to be able to work out the formula but can't.

To Google!

°C * 1.8 + 32 = °F

(°F - 32) / 1.8 = °C

A quick way to do the C -> F conversion in your head is to double the number then subtract 10%, then add the 32.

Example:

15°C * 2 = 30
30 - 10% (3) = 27
27 + 32 = 59°F

How bizarre. There is no 30 degrees in Scotland! :P

The first is exact, the other two are approximate. You left out the best example, which one may work out using Lance's formulae, which is -40 degrees.
