Science Olympiad: The Michikids did pretty well

Postby hippietrekx » Mon Mar 12, 2007 1:22 am

Well, you all may not know, but I've been online less (read: not at all) this week because Moose, Jimmy and I were building projects to compete in a science competition against six other schools called Science Olympiad.

Well, I had my hands full making a rubber band powered plane that was pretty small and weighed less than 7 g with a 1.5 g motor. The kid who got their plane to fly for the longest time won. And I got first place with a time of 1:24. Cool. The next closest time was 49 seconds, so I pretty much pwned that event. Yes, I did say pwn. I had a back up plane. When I first started building them, I named them Chuck and Burt. You know, after Chuck Yeager and Burt Rutan? Burt was the best plane, but Chuck had a little epilepsy.

I also got a second place in a written test of five areas of science.

Moose and I competed in Astronomy and got a fourth place. Then she and I did a genetics event and got a first. It think it was our beautiful diagram of protein synthesis that did it. Oh yeah. If you turned the nucleus up-side-down, it looked like a happy face! ^.^

Jimmy, another girl, and I got a third place in experimental design.

Jimmy and Moose were pulling their hair out all this week trying to build a guitar from scratch. They barely finished in time on friday night (the competition was on Saturday). And guess what? They got a second place with that and their home-made chimes. Yay!

Jimmy also scored a fifth in ecology.

There were about 20 other events, and our school got a fourth place over all out of 6. Not bad considering the other schools had been working for nearly 4 months, and our school only started working 2 weeks ago, because our teacher wasn't given the event schedule like she should have been given a long time ago.

Ronoh was supposed to help me with the plane, but didn't help at all. Then he tried to basically take over Moose and Jimmy's music project, and cut through a circular saw's cord while he was running it which blew all of the circuits in the room and set Jimmy and Moose back a day on the guitar. We're all pretty anti-Ronoh right now.

But at any rate, your hippie is back! (And Moose, Jimmy, and I make noise when we walk because we got medals for our winnings from third on up. :D )

She's got medals, that jingle-jangle-jingle.

Congratsness on all the coolness.

I saw a bright glow way off to the south, but I didn't know what it was.

Way to go.
