We’re up against Hertz in the cup later, and I suspect we’ll struggle. European games where the other side are better and we can play a counter attacking game are easier than having to beat teams that sit in against us.

There is a Lady Stick Ball Competition in Oz just now and India have a quite remarkable batter Shafali Verma, sixteen years old and one of the best players in the competition.

Ah, Stick Ball! The endless lazy, beery weekend days in front of the telly in a sweltering South England summer, the only final-year student not away for the weekend in an old villa housing eight, with a hospital-owned personnel swimming pool a hundred meters away, completely without responsibilities, completely satisfied with doing nothing at all except reading crime novels and watching stick balls. Take me back to '95. Open another can!

Meanwhile, Greuther are one up at home to would-be League winners Stuttgart. That is unexpected, Stuttgart have consistelntly played in the top three this season, and they crushed us in the first leg. If we win, Bielefeld might extend their non-existent lead to six points tomorrow on their way to promotion.

Stick Ball = cricket ? I thought Stick Ball was golf, hockey or shinty, and that cricket is Poof Ball. Or is that rugby.

I understood Stick ball to be cricket, yes. Poofball would presumably not be used by someone who likes to watch, much less play it. And you wouldn't anyone in golf a "batter", right?

Good result for Fuerth.

Stick ball is cricket, rugby is “Chase the egg”.

As predicted Rangers can’t win in a domestic competition.

Hertz 1 - 0 Rangers in the Cup.

Played 142, won 69, drawn 27, lost 46.

That Dietmar Hopp, the co-founder of SAP, one of Germany's richest men, impresario of the Hoffenheitm ascent, was a son of a whore. By rights, this match should have been aborted and adjudicated as a three-nil for Hoffenheim at the green table. That would have sent a message.

As funny as it is to see the currant buns beaten at home by Accies, RCC could really have done with the 3 points staying at home. So could the IRU tally.

Not a lot of optimism for the coming weekend from this side of the Chunnel. Hertha in their fifth and last "easy" match against the direct competitors (of which two were lost, humiliatingly, one drawn and one won), at home to Bremen, who hold the second-to-last spot. Greuther away to Holstein Kiel, who came in fifth last season and are two points below us in the table right now. Anything more promising from the Great Apalachian Fragment Left Behind?

Not a good moment for that kind of derby. Let's all keep a good dram for Sunday night to tender to our wounds.

England 33 - 30 Wales

Losing bonus point for Wales, none for England.

Wales join Italy in being eliminated.

Scotland fight for their lives against France tomorrow.

Hertha BSC 2 - 2 Werder Bremen

It just doesn't get any better. 28 points, twelve to go in 9 matches. That seems rather a stiff challenge. Four of the five teams below us still play tomorrow, and if it's a bad Hertha day. we'llbe in fourteenth, three above the relegation playoffs.

Played 145, won 69, drawn 28, lost 48.

So, the calculus for France v Scotland tonight is quite simple.

France, England, and Ireland remain in contention no matter what happens tonight.

Wales and Italy are already eliminated.

Scotland remains (theoretically) alive if they win, and are out if they lose or draw, irrespective of any bonus point outcome in the three scenarios.

However - even a Scotland win means an eventual Scottish triumph rests on some other events that are, at best, improbable, e.g., England losing to Italy when that match is eventually played (postponed due to viruses).

Scotland 14 - 7 France at the half

French player sent off with a red card a few minutes ago.

France has been invincible so far. If Scotland win, this is massive.
