I watched some of the game, you were the better team but they played well. And I can appreciate a gritty defensive effort, I see enough of them.
Get it up ye.

Absolutely. I never got the impression that the German team had comman and control of the game. It was a gritty, intense fighting game. As we say here, the garrulls were really eating grass.

Saffers pulled it off last minute, defeating Argentina.

New Zealand crushed Australia earlier today.

Brasil 1 - 1 Germany, in the Final of the Olympic football tournament.
Brasil win after penalties.

A team packed with international superstar hopefuls (plus a star and super-star), many of them in the strongest phase of their Southern hemisphere season, need 120 min and a penalty shootout to win over a German team thrown together 6 days before the first match consisting of German Second League youngster, a few middling Bundesliga players, plus a pair of established midfielders from largeer clubs without any great international achievements. Be afraid, Brasil, be very afraid of the next encounter. I have to include this:

Played 19, won 12, drawn 2, lost 5.

CL group stage draw:
Image

Should be easy for Bayern, doable for Dortmund and Leverkusen, and quite impssible för Mönchengladbach (say that fast three times!). You'll root for them against Shellack, won't you?

None of the teams involved in this year's CL are in our count. :(

New Zealand 29 - 9 Australia

NZ triumphed against last year's champion for the second time, earning the bonus point both times.

SpVgg Greuther Fürth 3 - 2 FC Erzgebirge Aue

I thought things were going the usual way when Aue equalized after being 2-0 down. But a sendoff and a lucky header saved the day for us.

Hertha debut against Freiburg later this afternoon.

Played 23 won 16 draw 2 lost 5

Only by having TWO lucky winners:

Hertha 2 - 1 SC Freiburg

Sweltering heat, motionless first half. Drew ahead at 70 min, killer equalizer at 90+3, lucky punch at 90+5. I didn't know my Hertha could even dream up such a thing, let alone do it. They'll ned this and the next games' points soon, being at home to Schalke and away to Munich in week 3 and 4.

Played 25, won 17, drawn 3, lost 5

Oh Auntie Hertha, you can't even give us an easy first game. It does set the tone for the season though. Stress and drama, this will go until May.

Put the missus back to work, or join the NHS, your death in service benefits would pay the house off.

I have started doing some things left handed in preparation for my rage stroke . . .

The Paralympics start tomorrow, despite Brazil doing its best to not have them, spending Paralympic money on the Olympics and generally being dicks.

Four years old now but bears rewatching: Meet the Superhumans.

That was actually excellent!

I love the scene where the music is drowned out for a moment when the swimmer hits the water.

And yes, wheelchair basketball isn't for sissies. At all.

Some of the basketball is actually Murderball or wheelchair rugby, but neither game is for the fainthearted.

I'm afraid my assiduous disinterest in the non-Winter version of the Olympics extends to the Paralympics. If there were events taking place in my garden, I wouldn't even look out of the window.

In that case can I interest you in an old joke about the blind football (yes it exists and the ball has bells in it)?

The semi-final was abandoned when a Morris dancer was kicked to death . . .

Ha! But still, it's a fitting punishment for Morris dancing.
