I don't know, don't you think Germany vs. Vanuatu will offer a lot mor bang for the buck?

Anyway, I'll be glued to the TV... for a day.

Don't knock Vanuata, they'll have some Kiwis playing for them. You might have more chance with the US. :D

Afghanistan are the hot favourites since a number of their players grew up in Pakistan after the Soviet invasion. You haven't seen anyone take sport seriously until you have seen Indians and Pakistanis about cricket.

ETA: Of course Scotland and Netherlands are several divisions above this. :-

And on further checking Canuckistan seem to be on the level of indiviual Caribean islands so at least one division up.

USA -v- Mozambique
Nepal -v- Germany

in today's opening games. It would appear from the squad liststhat many countries draw heavily on those with sub-continental ancestry.

I will be obliged if everyone is too polite to mention last night's football.

Hmm, Germany all out for 69 (insert joke here) Nepal are cruising towards victory; Mozambique 74 runs for 5 wickets lost and 10 overs left. Not a good score so the USA might do well in reply.

As a comparison Norway scored 360 and Botswana 205.

From some of the scores there is a wide range of talent between teams.

Now if you want to go into detail over German cricket talent, why don't I start discussing how German expatriate footballer Andreas Hinkel won a brilliant championship title with his club yesterday night? Hmm?

Speaking about superb talent -

Germany 2 - 2 Belorussia

Bernd Stange, Belorussia's German coach, put it best when he said, "this was a typical training camp match". The team was exhausted, unconcentrated, badly coordinated, at the low point of the preparation period.

Oh, they were, absolutely. On the other hand, our Spaniard was pretty week, and the hungarian-Brazilian and the Swiss didn't even play.

Nice game though -

Hmmm, Netherlands - Italy leaves me at a loss whom to not support more. Shall we say, we wish for a 0 - 0 with four red cards and assorted sequelae of the ensuing pub brawl?

Hmm, torn between board loyalty to HD and to the man who signs my paychecks.

Mrs B is taking the pragmatic view that she is supporting Nederland since she is on a day trip to Utrecht today. Her allegiance will switch to Germany at the end of the week when she goes to Dusseldorf for a couple of days.

That seems fair enough to me. Just make sure she is in Germany for the Final (the only opportunity Germany and Netherlands can meet this time).

You know I couldn't care less.

For me this thing can't be over soon enough. It has driven half the country crazy. (More than usual.)

Netherlands 3 - 0 Italy

 This was downright frightening. I mean, Italy concede three goals? And wasn't the Netherlands supposed to be the team that is always unbeatable on paper but always falls apart when it counts?

Hmmm, looks like we have a new favourite here. Enjoy your headaches tomoroow, all ye Dutchmen, it is well-earned.

Mrs B flew out of Schipol about an hour before kickoff. Said it was very quiet and very orange. Her office building in Utrecht was very loud and very orange.

I thought v Nistelrooy was offside but apparently the injured Italian still counts as "active". A point missed by all the UK experts. I still think Italy will get further than Nederland.

Oh? Maybe they don't need those silly rules in kick'n'rush country. The German commentator explained it during the first rerun.

There seems to be the fine point that the FIFA rule talks only about a player intentionally leaving the playing field, shich is a bookable offence. Of course, Panucci wasn't booked as he was pushed off the field in the fight for the ball with Snijder. Does that also mean that he shouldn't have counted for the offside call? Lawyers to the rescue!

My husband would disagree! He loves the Netherlands uni. He wore his jersey yesterday while watching the game.

He only sometimes goes for a team because of their uniforms. He'd take Germany over the Netherlands in the final because his heritage is Germany.

I just enjoy watching the tournament. I don't know enough about the teams to root for one over another.

I wasn't referring to the customs. They can't bother me because I'm not watching.

It's the street decorations. It's tacky.
And apparently infectious too, single houses are rare, but there are complete streets and cul-de-sacs overloaded with orange streamers and team flags.

Do the cities light up their buildings in orange? Baltimore did so in purple after the Ravens won the Superbowl in 2001. Pretty funny. Even individual households would have their streetlighting and porchlighting from purple bulbs!!!

p.s. Just watched Ronaldo score and assit two beautiful goals for Portugal vs the Czech Republic! I have a special affinity for Portugal after spending my honeymoon there.
