Now we will see.

New Zealand hosting Australia, winner takes the tournament. (Somewhat complicated situation in the event of a draw.)

Someone pointed out that no team has won the Tr-Nations/Championship and RWC in the same year which surprises me since 6 of 7 winners have been Oz/NZ/RSA.

Does that count Greuther's ignominious defeat against Aue in the German FA Cup first round (0 - 1)?

I just checked, and this is correct. However, this year is the first year the Rugby Championship and the World Cup will both be held, so there are zero data points on that one. Regarding the tri-Nations, it only started in 1996, one year after the 1995 world cup, so only 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2011 had both. England won in 2003, and they're not in the tri-Nations, so there were only three other opportunities :) So the Tri-Nations/World Cup winners were New Zealand/Australia in 1999, New Zealand/England in 2003, New Zealand/South Africa in 2007, and Australia/New Zealand in 2011.

1987 New Zealand wins world cup
1988 <no tournament played>
1989 <no tournament played>
1990 <no tournament played>
1991 Australia wins world cup
1992 <no tournament played>
1993 <no tournament played>
1994 <no tournament played>
1995 South Africa wins world cup
1996 New Zealand wins Tri-Nations
1997 New Zealand wins Tri-Nations
1998 South Africa wins Tri-Nations
1999 New Zealand wins Tri-Nations, Australia wins World Cup
2000 Australia wins Tri-Nations
2001 Australia wins Tri-Nations
2002 New Zealand wins Tri-Nations
2003 New Zealand wins Tri-Nations, England wins World Cup
2004 South Africa wins Tri-Nations
2005 New Zealand wins Tri-Nations
2006 New Zealand wins Tri-Nations
2007 New Zealand wins Tri-Nations, South Africa wins World Cup
2008 New Zealand wins Tri-Nations
2009 South Africa wins Tri-Nations
2010 New Zealand wins Tri-Nations
2011 Australia wins Tri-Nations, New Zealand wins World Cup
2012 New Zealand wins Rugby Championship
2013 New Zealand wins Rugby Championship
2014 New Zealand wins Rugby Championship
2015 Australia wins Rugby Championship, World Cup starts in a few weeks

No, I thought there must be a Cup game for them.

Played 8, won 5, drawn 1, lost 2.

That's the idea. The Bielefeld conspirators are strong. Probably trying to take over the world from us.

The Cubs have just swept a series against the Giants, and now have a better record than two of the three NL division leaders. But, because they play in the same division as the Cardinals and the how-are-people/teams-still-not-taking-them-seriously-yet Pirates, they are still relegated to the final wild card spot. Honestly, I don't care if the Cubs make the playoffs or not, or care all that much about baseball - but a few years ago, we had this insufferable salesman who was a Giants fan, and ever since then, I've harbored an irrational hatred for the Giants. And I have a couple of long-suffering relatives that are Cubs fans - so, keep it up, Cubbies!

When you say "series", you just mean a few games in a row against the same opponent, right? Playoffs shouldn't start until maybe September, if I recall correctly?

I have something similar going on for French teams, for a similar reason.

Was Tsar Nicholas in attendance the last time the Cubs won the World Series, or did he read about it in the newspaper?

That is correct. Major League Baseball usually schedules teams to play each other 3 or 4 times in a row during the regular season.

It appears that the Czar was probably otherwise occupied with this, so I think it's safe to assume that he read about it. My Cub-fan relatives would not come into existence for another 50 years, at the earliest - and really wouldn't be Cubs fans until they got cable (and WGN) nearly 30 years later.

Nicholas II, who used to be bizarre . . .

I guess there are people still around who were alive then, but not very many - and they may not remember that time very well.

The Soviet Union came and went since then. At the time, there were emperors in St. Petersburg, Berlin, Vienna, and Beijing, and a Sultan in Istanbul. The Ford Model T was 13 days old. A few days later, Wilbur Wright would fly an aeroplane at the astonishing altitude of 377 feet. The Titanic hadn't been built yet. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were still alive.

It's been a while!

Bielefeld (well, what THEY call Bielefeld) 0 - 2 Hertha, in the first round of the German FA Cup.

OK, we all know this fake, but Heid, since it's a win, maybe you could chalk it up into our list...

Well done Hertha, beating a team that doesn't exist.

Played 9, won 6, drawn 1, lost 2.
