Well, they do have quite a world-wide following. And they tend to be good. For example, from 1996 to 2011, there was the "Tri-Nations" tournament, which featured the national teams of New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa - they won the championship 10 out of the 16 times. This tournament was expanded to the Rugby Championship in 2012, and they won three out of the four so far (they lost to Australia this year). There have been seven world cups so far, every four years from 1987 to 2011, and they won the first and the last (Australia has one twice, South Africa has one twice, and England has one once). When you consider that New Zealand has a far smaller population than South Africa, Australia, England, and lots of other rugby-paying countries, that's pretty good.

They also do a haka (Maori war dance) at the beginning of each match, although some of the Pacific Islands teams do that also.

Okay, I found a game: Bay of Plenty vs. Waikato, which will be followed by Southland vs. North Harbour.

How long do I have to watch before I get it?

This sounds like ITM, the New Zealand domestic rugby union competition.

A long time to get everything, but probably not too long to get the basics. Relative to American football, the most important things are probably:

(i) No forward pass - the severity of the penalty depends on whether it was intentional or not.

(ii) When the ball carrier is tackled, the play continues - the ball carrier must release the ball immediately.

(iii) When you cross the try line (the equivalent of the goal line in American football), you must ground the ball to score a try (five points). No grounding, no score.

(iv) After scoring a try, the scoring team kicks for another two points. The kick is taken straight back from where the try was scored, so if a try is scored way over by the side of the field (near the "touch" line), the kick will be more difficult. So when a ball carrier scores a try, and isn't under pressure, you often see them run towards the center of the try line before grounding the ball, to make the kick easier. But if they're under pressure, they just score the try any way they can.

(v) Minor infractions result in a scrum. More serious infractions result in a penalty kick, which may be used to try to kick between the goal posts for three points. If it's too far (or if they really need a try), then typically the ball will be kicked "into touch" (over the side lines), and the kicking team then throws the ball in with a lineout at the place where the ball went out.

(vi) If the ball goes out the side (into touch), the team that didn't touch the ball last throws back in with a lineout. (Exception - if a team kicks the ball into touch on a penalty kick, the kicking team throws in for the lineout.) If a team kicks the ball, and it bounces on the field before going into touch, the lineout is where the ball went out. If it is kicked directly into touch, then the lineout is where the kick took place if it was from in front of the kicking team's 22 metre line (so no gain in territory because of the kick). However, if the kick was behind the 22 metre line, then the lineout takes place where the ball went into touch.

(vii) Two halves of forty minutes each, when the clock runs out, the play continues until the ball is dead.

You'll figure out the rest :)

This is union. For league, the main differences that occur to me are, thirteen players instead of fifteen, and when the ball goes down, the attacking team simply restarts play (so no struggle for possession). This is up to some limit, so it's like American football, where you have a certain number of "downs" to advance the ball. Also, a try is four points in league, not five.

That sounds as if even I could get it.

I remember seeing Jonah Lomu play, when I did a final-year-student stint in Southampton in '95. He went, as a stunned England supporter muttered, "right through the fullback" on his way to a try. And there was the Haka, as intense then as it is now. I am a sissy myself and was always chosen last in any kind of contact sport (any kind of team sport, come to that), but I get a feeling that rugby is a tad more civilised and less go-for-the-blood-and-broken-bones than American Football.

Rangers crush Queen of the South 5-1.

Played 24, won 15, drawn 4, lost 5.

And if the ball goes off the side of the field it is a lineout where the ball is thrown back in by the side who didn't put it out, unless it went out from a penalty.

Thank you, Mactep, but I must admit that about 2/3 the through reading that it began to sound like Charlie Brown's teacher.

I didn't watch long last night because it was late and I was tired. I like what I saw though, except the bright pink the refs were wearing. For some reason I found it distracting.

I'll watch some more...

OK, shorter version - no forward passes, and when the ball carrier goes down, you keep on playing.

Dortmund 3 - 1 Hertha

So it is the expected result, but not the thrashing we feared. Apparently, Hrtha were looking to squeeze in a late equalizer when Aubameyang ended their hopes close to time.

Played 25, won 15, drawn 4, lost 6.

That makes sense, but then what were thing plays that kind of looked like forward passes?

If they were forward passes, then they were "knock-ons", which should incur a penalty.

Passing backward/sideways can be done as many times as you like.

Kicking forward is also permissible.

Scotland 2 - 3 Germany, in Glasgow, in a qualifier for the 2016 European championships in France.

I think it was an exciting match. Just really, really fun and gripping football.

Played 29, won 17, drawn 4, lost 8.

I do hope he was gracious about it. Scotland really gave our boys a run for their money, equalizing twice and straining the Germans' nerves with tough 6-4-0 defending. Die Mannschaft hndled it well, and I think the win was well-earned overall.

The Rugby World Cup is imminent, Scotland are in a group with South Africa, Samoa, USA and Japan which presents some interesting problems. The US will be big and fast but not overly skilled so we have to outplay them, Japan will be fast and committed so we have to outmuscle them, South Africa will be big, fast and skilful so we'll lose unless we get lucky and Samoa are big and committed so we have to run the legs off them.

We have a Kiwi coach who has started to return to the bad old days of brining in anyone who isn't good enough for the All Blacks or 'Boks but has a Scottish granny. We have two Saffers who have only just qualified on residency, a Kiwi just off the plane, a player from Zim who has been here a few years now, and someone else I'm forgetting. All will be forgiven if we win, but it grates a bit. I suspect our three southern Africans will be flying into people against the 'Boks.
Get it up ye.
