You're talking about that sport with the guys in shorts and that round black-and-white ball, right? Yeah....that's as exciting as watching paint dry.

Latex!!! Latex is always exciting.

You might try catching a game on the radio. Listening to paint dry can be soothing.

And they have them again for the 2010 qualifiers. :D The english media also seem blissfully unaware just how far from here Kazakstan is.

We got:

Holland
Scotland
Norway
FYR Macedonia
Iceland

That is ok, Norway aren't as good as they were, the other two are manageable. For once we have avoided long trips to shitholes in eastern europe in markedly different timezones. Nederlands we know about, Norway are like us and play the same style, nothing to scare us. By the same token first place is unlikely so a playoff beckons.

Arneb's mob:

Germany
Russia
Finland
Wales
Azerbijan
Liechtenstein

Should be straightforward but they'll make it look hard, they always do. Depends a lot on which Russia turn up, the mediocre one or the very good one.

But you'll admit we didn't make it look hard this time. The ugly matches (0 - 3 against Czek Repucblic, 0 - 0 - against Wales) all happened when we had clinched the qualification - earlier than ever before.l

We had Finland in the WC 2002 qulifiers, and I remember a tough and hard-won 2 - 2 against Finland in Helsinki. Those and the Russians are going to be interesting.

Tough for you - Netherlands are always good for a 5 - 0 thrashing if they get into their "flow". But take their plaything away, and they will have a hard time.

Yep last time we had the Dutch in a playoff it was 1 - 0 to us at Hampden and then 5 - 0 to them in A'dam. Their problem is always the same, the squad has 6 captains, 6 vice captains, 6 who think they should be captain and 4 who don't speak to anyone else in the squad. :D

First time in ages we haven't had Estonia or Lithuania.

With the first games being a year away it is tough to know who will be good and who won't. Our coach is talking about going back to club football so it depends if he stays, and if he doesn't who we get instead.

We have started the "Bertie Vogts for England" campaign!

Euro 2008 opening round draw:
Group A
Switzerland
Czech Republic
Portugal
Turkey
....which will be extremely interesting. No heavyweight favourite (except Czech Republic, maybe), but four highly skilled teams that are always good for a surprise. Switzerland will need all the home advantage they can get.

Group B
Austria
Croatia
Germany
Poland
... us lucky krauts, as always. Don't think it could have got any easier (well, didn't help the last two times, OTOH).

Group C
Netherlands
Italy
Romania
France
...the group of death, or rather, The Group of Death.

Group D
Greece
Sweden
Spain
Russia
... Possibly the weakest group of the four. And the two survivors will meet one of the two survivors from TGoD, so, bleak outlook for these teams.

Overall, this is an interesting matchup from day one. No Iran vs. Costa Rica and Tunisia vs. Ukraine paint dryers, but high quality football from the start. Love it. Wish you were there, Heid :(

Always best when you play your neighbours, :D It should be straightforward for you.

Yeah, shame we aren't there but we would have been in the France/Nederlands/Roumania GofD so we wouldn't have gone through anyway.

Thay are talking about reviving the old Home International series between Scotland/Eng-ger-lund/Wales/Norn Iron next summer since none of us made it. I can't see it happening and the english still haven't forgiven us for Wembley in 1977 so it may have to be us/Wales/NI/Eire instead.

The English won't allow it. They couldn't be sure of not losing against Jersey or the Isle of Man, you know.

There is one brilliant line by Ivica Olic, the guy who scored the first goal for Croatia. He said (I paraphrase): "Face it, folks. You didn't lose for bad luck or the wrong tactics. You lost because we. were. the better. team".

Aaahh, the satisfaction :D

O.K., I'll eat my words when/if we crash out in the last match against Austria.

But don't anyone here say later I underestimate Croatia. Because I don't. They are one hell of a good team these days. (And Heid, if you like to dig it up, there is the one from France 1998 as well  ).

Guus Hiddink

You are just plain mean. :D

Don't forget that Russia has a brilliant coach, so there might be a few surprises there.

Yes, I'm biased.
Hiddink is the local hero around here. I actually met him once.
(And he's good for tourism.)

You don't see Korean on a Dutch sign very often! Hiddink has done so much with such different teams he is obviously a good manager. I'm glad he isn't going to England.

I liked Van Basten's comments that he was happy with the group for the WC since they avoided technically skilled eastern european teams and had three physical northern teams. We took that as a compliment.

African Nation's Cup anyone?

As the only country in Africa I have any connection with is RSA it looks like I'm supporting Bafana Bafana for the duration. Other than that it is the more southerly team. Or the one with the best nickname.

I wondered why Nigeria were playing so badly and then remembered they are coached by Wee Bertie McVogts. :D

Meanwhile in Scotland; tonight Rangers play a team 3 divisions below them in the cup, should be a comfortable win, but . . .

In other news, last night Rangers scrambled a late equaliser against a team in green with a shamrock as their logo, no not the usual one, and through to the last 16 of the Uefa cup on away goals. We'll take it, Werder Bremen next.

Our cunning plan is the same again: a nil all draw at home in the first leg, then nick a goal away. Make a two leg game a 20 minute shootout. Fear the Novo, he is your doom!

I admit I am rather more interested in the success of the Scottish football team currently playing in the Champions League...You know, UEFA Cup is the just the Losers Cup, as our famous Kaiser once remarked.

I didn't say that would continue playing after next week  Besides, I always have a soft spot for Barca.

Just looked in the mirror. So I have seen a doctor know. Should I feel better now?
