Let me amend that - Scotland cannot be eliminated this weekend.

I feel your pain. On the other hand, surprisingly, I at least have good news.

Aberdeen 1 - 2 Ross County

Played 137, won 67, drawn 25, lost 45.

Wales 23 - 27 France.

Bonus point for Wales, none for France.

England/Ireland tomorrow is important. Everyone (except Ireland) are better off if England win.

No-one is better off if England wins. On the other hand there is nothing funnier than two Welsh commentators explaining in excruciating detail exactly why Wales actually won.

Strictly in a “let’s try to win the tournament” sense, if Ireland win, they have thirteen table points (fourteen if they get the bonus point). France already have thirteen. Furthermore, France and Ireland still play each other, so unless it is a draw, someone will have seventeen points. Italy, Wales, and Scotland cannot reach this level, and England would need everything to go its way, including getting both bonus points when losing to Ireland.

So if Ireland win, Wakes, England, and Scotland all need Ireland to lose to Italy, and to draw against France. Likely?

England 24 - 12 Ireland. No bonus points for anyone.

Theoretically, everyone but Italy are still alive. But realistically, Scotland and Wales are walking dead.

Three-horse race between France, England, and Ireland. France are the team to beat at this point.

While the press is turning their MG fire on Hertha's fuckuppery (really, the first time in ages anyone found Hertha interesting), the other Big City Club (Union) makes a splash, winning 2 - 1 in Frankfurt and steering nine points clear of the relegation playoff spot. Bravo!

Yay, that's something.

Meanwhile in Big City, Jürgen Klinsmann is really taking a dump on the good carpet, having his "private" notes "leaked" to the press, in which - small wonder - he complains how everyone at Hertha is an incompetent idiot, does nothing but trying to protect his vested rights, and should really be fired ASAP. The things you say if you leave a club in disarray, opening up construction sites everywhere and doing nothing to get the work done. Fuck, is that guy over.

Not that I think Hertha have a particularly competent management, far from it. Hertha made it to CL in (I think) '03 or something, they could have capitalized on it big time, but didn't. Our former striker, Michael Preetz, has benn running the show since before the flood, and he has done nothing to bring the club forward. The one time we made to the EL group phase we lost to Luhansk (a city Russia had already begun to make war on) and Rosenborg FK. They had a banner out before the Cologne game along the lines of "12 years, two relegations, 1 EL qualification, one man at the helm". And they're right.

Meanwhile, Klinis has thrown in the towel at RTL, the TV station that carries the Euro qualifiers. He will be "missed", they write, but his decision is "respected". You were able to hear the sigh of relief between their Cologne headquarters and our little Western Siberian city.

I think he is very convinced that he is an utterly great guy, that Hertha badly needed him and renounced him to their detriment and that someone of high standing, like him, should expose their evil ways. Even in the short time of his success (basically, October '04 to July '06) i thoght of him as something of a snake oil salesman. I thought it was an excellent idea to step back as national team boss after the success of '06: In a moment when everyone would miss him, when he knew his project would flourish under Löw and when his waknesses as a coach had not become too obvious yet.

He sold off some of his reputation off as U.S. team coach later, but he was still sorta kinda respected when the investor brought him to Hertha as his football brain. That might even have worked out - bringing in talent, networking, brokering deals with large companies, courting the Mayor for a new stadium, etc.. But he can't lead a Bundesliga team through the nitty-gritty of weekly preparation, video analysis and substitution juggling. He couldn't with Bayern, and he could do it even less with a bad to mediocre cadre like Hertha's. It's characteristic that he was able to bring in players with good potential (like Piatek) but then failed to coach them to good performances. Of course, it's everyone else's fault now.
:glp-fart:

BTW, away to last-place Düsseldorf, kicking off just now. Do or die.

Hey, Rangers going to meet up with Roundup Marketing Gang Bayer Leverkusen. Oddly, I like that club, but of course I will suspend any feelings of friendship for that Euroean encounter.
