They are at home to Bremen, who are still without a point. Great opportunity to fuck the fuck up.

What a weird situation in the Rugby Championship.

On Saturday, New Zealand hosts South Africa, followed by Australia hosting Argentina. Then a one week break, then two more weeks of competition.

New Zealand and South Africa each have a chance to win the tournament regardless of the outcome of the two matches this Saturday. Argentina has already been eliminated. So the one whose fate is (possibly) to be decided on Saturday is Australia.

Any one of the following events results in Australia being eliminated:
a) New Zealand wins against South Africa
b) New Zealand scores two bonus points
c) Australia loses to Argentina
d) Australia draws with Argentina
e) Australia fails to win a bonus point, and either New Zealand or South Africa wins a bonus point

So in order to stay alive this coming weekend, Australia must defeat Argentina, New Zealand must lost to or draw with South Africa, and if New Zealand loses, it must not score two bonus points. Furthermore, if Australia fails to win a bonus point, then New Zealand and South Africa also cannot score bonus points.

More generally, for Australia to win, then in the three remaining weeks, they must win all three times (twice against Argentina, once against South Africa), New Zealand must lose to Argentina, and New Zealand must lose to South Africa once and draw with South Africa the other time. Exactly that combination - no variation at all. (It doesn't matter which of the two matches between New Zealand and South Africa is a draw, and which is a South Africa victory). Furthermore, Australia must score at least two bonus points - if they do that, then neither New Zealand nor South Africa can win a bonus point. If Australia wins all three bonus points (the maximum possible, given that they must also win all three matches), then they can tolerate New Zealand and South Africa each winning one bonus point.

Looking at the first match this weekend only, if New Zealand win or score two bonus points, then Austalia is eliminated, and two of the five remaining matches, including the very last one of the tournament (both are between Australia and Argentina) become irrelavant to the outcome.

You do realise that when you are thinking this through everyone else, apart from the young ladies of negotiable affection, is getting drunk and thinking: "Woohoo! Sportsball! Run fast sportsball man!"

Not that there is anything wrong with being so analytical but it is a very niche way to watch rugby, at least in my experience, perhaps Singapore is more different than I thought.

One of the Irish bars, a typical place to watch rugby matches, is directly across the street from a building that has a certain reputation . . .

I have on quite a number of occasions in this bar seen middle-aged to elderly white men with young Asian ladies with high-high heels and quite skimpy clothing, united by their common love of rugby.

One does the analysis before the match, so during the match, one knows what each team need to do

This tournament at least, has changed the bonus point system. It used to be, a bonus point for scoring four tries, which could theoretically be earned at any time during the match. Now, it's a bonus point for scoring three tries more than the other team; since the other team can always score more tries, one doesn't really know whether this point will be scored until the end of the match. So we no longer have the possibility that the tournament can be clinched part-way through the match. This actually happened a few years ago; New Zealand won the tournament with almost thirty minutes still remaining in the match.

The Mem was once on a business trip in Budapest when a male colleague went to "phone home", he dialled a number and started speaking, a blonde in a short skirt outside the window answered her 'phone. He took the lift to the fifth floor, she came into the hotel and took the lift to the fifth floor. She re-appeared shortly after, he appeared five minutes later . . .

So you know what needs to happen and can shout "Run, run fast sportsball man!" As required. Do you place bets?

This sounds familiar - I think you have mentioned this at some point. It was "trouble at home", or something like that?

No, I place beers.

Celtic play in the Champions League tonight. People keep telling me they should go straight into the group stages because reasons. I think they shouldn't because PSG should take them roughly up the jacksie.

The same people told me Rangers wouldn't be a top six team last year, and they finished third where I always said they would. Those very fuckwits are telling me Rangers will be fifth because Hibs (just promoted) and Hertz (in disarray) will finish above them. Dundee something, something, St Johnstone, better team than something, something. No, no they fucking won't Rangers will be second or at worst third.

Just curious, but what does it cost to hire a young Asian lady to watch rugby with over there?

And that is why Celtic shouldn't go straight into the group stages despite being easily the best team in Scotland.

You do know what the player in the middle of the front row is called, don't you?

We can't compete with their level of spending, complain Celtic fans as they get ready for the match at the weekend against Ross County....

Indeed, and they have just collected their 12th UEFA report in six years for fan behaviour. Idiot on the field this time rather than the usual sectarian/anti-semitism.

I don't know. I think it's probably a lot more expensive than in most of the neighbouring countries.

You could double up with the earlier suggestion to hire a hooker to travel round with you to repel other, more pestering, young ladies.

Nice! And I see there is also an option for Tight Head or Loose Head. I think I'd prefer Tight Head.
