I'll spare him that, but they are our derby match and hated adversaries. Also, Inverness itself isn't really part of the Highlands culturally. It never really has been. Edmund Burt, for example, writing in the mid 1720's, says that in Inverness nobody speaks Gaelic - only English - but if you head more than 2 miles in any direction it's precisely the other way round.

England vs. Germany friendly tonight, 2 days before Remebrance Day. German and English teams are wearing black bands decorated with poppies. Reps from the British and German Navies, Air Forces and Armies laid down wreaths. Minute of Silence, the Last Post by a solo trumpet.

Well done.

21' Hey, we hit the bar in Wembley, and it's not counted as a goal. What's wrong with you people?

28' English goalie actually catches a shot, and makes a long throw which reaches an English player. This is not how it should be.

41' Gosh, that was close. Deep sleep in the German defence, Rüdiger gets a foot in the way.

90+3 Grrch! Almost, but not quite, the winning goal for England at the final whistle.
England 0 - 0 Germany

I agree to not count friendlies, although IIRC, I smuggled one in last year, and that saved us the 50 % quota.

BBC already reporting that a makeshift England team of youngsters held the world champions to a draw, and that therefore England are great and the future is rosy.

I believe the correct German expression in this circumstance is whatever is German for “what a bunch of arseholes”.

ETA - Arneb, your commentary in this thread was the only source of info I sought out for this match, so thanks and well done!

To be honest, that seems a fair assessment to me. England could well have won this, and Germany didn't have even one good chance in the second half (although our team was a bit makeshift, too, with Boateng and Kroos both missing). That was a good performance, from both teams. The important bit for England is that they produced no real bloopers this time. I mean, if an England goalie doesn't give us even one great howler over 90 min., that should scare us.

F.A.Z. writes, the DFB team hint at their potential. They squander a lot of chances, and in the second half, they were lucky not to get behind. Kind of the same gist.

Also, England were able to expose a few weak points in the German play. Antonio Rüdiger was an assett approximmately half the time - not enough for a central defender. Without Hummels at the top of his game this might have turned out differently. Germany didn't know how to utilize Kimmich's great potential as an offensive-hungry right defender. Özil was iffy, as always. Sandro Wagner can be a great closer, but in this match, he didn't happen. Can should have been a Xabi Alonso-like 6, but wasn't (for the 20 min he was on the pitch). ter Steegen had to be at his best way too often (but then, Neuer had to be, too, in 2014). Vardy was getting way too much ball time. And utilization of chances was too sluggish.

OTOH, ter Steegen would be a no. 1 goalie anywhere but here, what we saw from this slender young Sané boy was a charm, Hummels was an unassailable lock, and Gündogan was very, very mature steering our game from behind.

Oh, and it was pleasure to keep you all abreast of the really important things in this world :D .

Friendly game, doesn’t count. Even though his sister has lived there for forty years and is married to one.
