With South Africa in possession of the bonus point, Canada can now score ten million tries in the second half, and it won’t matter. Canada are not only eliminated, but cannot come in third, thereby qualifying for 2023.

So the two teams that advance and the team that is eliminated, but qualifies for 2023, are New Zealand, South Africa, and Italy. We just don’t know which is which.

Care for a small wager as to who comes third?

South Africa 66 - 7 Canada

South Africa guaranteed to advance; Canada eliminated. Table points for Pool B:

South Africa: 15
New Zealand: 14
Italy: 10
Namibia: 0
Canada: 0

New Zealand v Italy will determine who is first, who is second, and who is third. Italy must win to advance, New Zealand advance with a win, a draw, and sometimes even with a loss, if they score enough bonus points. Namibia and Canada play to see who will be fourth and who will be fifth.

Argentina 47 - 12 United States

Table Points in Pool C:

England: 15
France: 13
Argentina: 11
Tonga: 1
United States: 0

Argentina are third place, and are eliminated, but qualify for 2023. England and France will slug it out to see who is first and who is second; Tonga and United States will meet to decide who is fourth and who is fifth.

All going surprisingly well for Scotland, Russia don't seem able to cope with our B Team, which is trying to run them into the ground with a fast paced game.

Third in Pool A, or third in the tournament?

They've got the bonus point now.

Canada were eliminated 18 minutes into their match, when South Africa got the bonus point :)

Oh, I guess you meant in Pool B. I think it will be Italy :)

Yes, Scotland look surprisingly good.

Scotland now have a better point differential than Ireland and Japan.

Scotland had to win, and they did, in a very big way.

Scotland 61 - 0 Russia

Everyone in the pool beat Russia, but Scotland did so by the largest margin - 61 points, versus 35 for Ireland, 25 for Samoa, and 20 for Japan.

Table Points for Pool A:

Japan: 14
Ireland: 11
Scotland: 10
Samoa: 5
Russia: 0

Russia has a lock on fifth place, and Samoa on fourth. Both remaining matches in this pool are important, which is not the case for Pools B and C. Ireland v Samoa coming up next, and then Japan v Scotland.

Wales v Fiji coming up. This could result in the elimination of Fiji, and ensure that Australia and Wales advance.

Wales 29 - 17 Fiji

Fiji now eliminated.

Table Points for Pool D:

Wales: 14
Australia: 11
Fiji: 7
Georgia: 5
Uruguay: 4

Wales and Australia both guaranteed to move up, Fiji, Georgia, and Uruguay all eliminated.

Australia v Georgia and Wales v Uruguay will determine not only which of Wales and Australia come first and which come second, but which of Fiji, Georgia, and Uruguay come third and therefore qualify for 2023.

With eight out of ten matches played in each pool, we have:

Qualified: South Africa, England, France, Wales, Australia.

Eliminated: Samoa, Russia, Namibia, Canada, Argentina, Tonga, United States, Fiji, Georgia, Uruguay.

Still to be resolved: Japan, Ireland, Scotland, New Zealand, Italy.

Pool B news - New Zealand v Italy cancelled due to the typhoon. The result is, it is considered a draw.

Table points:

New Zealand: 16
South Africa: 15
Italy: 12
Namibia: 0
Canada: 0

Namibia v Canada still coming up, but we now know the first three places - New Zealand in the pool, South Africa are runner up, and Italy are eliminated, but qualify for 2023. Outcome of Namibia v Canada will determine who are fourth and who are fifth.

Pool C news - England v France cancelled due to the typhoon. The result is, it is considered a draw.

Table points:

England: 17
France: 15
Argentina: 11
Tonga: 1
United States: 0

United States v Tonga still coming up. We already knew England and France would advance, but now we know that England does so as the winner, and France as the runner up. We also already knew that Argentina came in third, therefore being eliminated, but qualifying for 2023. Outcome of United States v Tonga will determine who are fourth and who are fifth.

With eight out of ten matches played in each pool, and two more matches cancelled due to the typhoon, we have:

Qualified: New Zealand (winner, Pool B), South Africa (runner up, Pool B), England (winner, Pool C), France (runner up, Pool C), Wales (winner or runner up, Pool D), Australia (winner or runner up, Pool D).

Eliminated: Samoa, Russia, Italy (qualified for 2023), Namibia, Canada, Argentina (qualified for 2023), Tonga, United States, Fiji (may qualify for 2023), Georgia (may qualify for 2023), Uruguay (may qualify for 2023).

Still to be resolved: Japan, Ireland, Scotland.

The main remaining drama is in Pool A, where we don't yet know which two teams (out of Japan, Ireland, and Scotland) will advance, and which will be eliminated but qualify for 2023.

Pool B - only thing remaining is to determine who is fourth and who is fifth.

Pool C - only thing remaining is to determine who is fourth and who is fifth.

Pool D - we know that Wales and Australia will advance, but we don't know who will be the winner and who will be the runner up. The three remaining teams (Fiji, Georgia, and Uruguay) all have a chance to come in third and qualify for 2023, but that might change tomorrow.

And - we have the possibility that Japan v Scotland might be cancelled.

One of the cancelled matches was New Zealand v Italy. This one actually mattered, although Italy have never won (or even drawn) against New Zealand in their fourteen previous meetings. So it seems like the cancellation produced the same result (in terms of rankings within the pool) that would have occurred if the match were played.

The other cancelled match was England v France. The outcome was less obvious in this case, but it also mattered less - this match would have determined who won the pool, and who was the runner up. But both teams advance anyway, it only affects which particular quarter final they end up in. One of the teams is still going to face Australia in the quarter final, and the other is going to face Wales - we just don't know which is which.

But if Japan v Scotland is cancelled, that's a whole different matter. Japan is currently ranked eight best team in the world, and Scotland as ninth, and the outcome is far from obvious. If this one is cancelled and declared a draw, then Japan advance with 16 table points, and Scotland have 12. Ireland have 11, but they play Samoa - if Ireland win, draw, or even lose but score a bonus point, they'll have 12 or more, and Ireland beat Scotland in the event of a tie. Scotland would then be eliminated.

But if the match were played, it may be a different story. Scotland advance with a sufficiently crushing victory over Japan (win plus bonus point, with Japan not scoring a bonus point), or with Ireland having an underwhelming performance against Samoa. Even if Ireland win, but do not earn the bonus point, they have 15 table points. In the event of a three-way tie at 15 table points, Scotland could be the pool winner, depending on the point differential in Ireland v Samoa.

So cancellation of Japan v Scotland, if it happens, could affect the outcome a lot more than the other cancellations, and Scotland are the potential victim here.

Another Fun Fact.

New Zealand have never before failed to win a group stage match in any World Cup, ever. Since the beginning of them in 1987. They won all 31 matches.

Now they have failed to win, because the match won't be played, because there's a big typhoon coming. It's a draw instead.

Australia v Georgia coming up in a few hours.

Australia are already guaranteed to advance, but they must win to have any hope of winning the pool, and therefore facing France instead of England in the finals. But Wales still has one match to play, so even if Australia win, it still may not be enough.

Georgia are already eliminated, but they can guarantee a third-place finish, and therefore 2023 qualification, with a win. A draw with a bonus point gives them a possibility of third-place, although Uruguay could still take that from them. Anything less means Fiji, and possibly Uruguay as well, will finish ahead, putting Georgia in fourth or fifth place.

Australia 27 - 8 Georgia

Bonus point victory for Australia, no bonus points for Georgia.

Table points for Pool D:

Australia: 16
Wales: 14
Fiji: 7
Georgia: 5
Uruguay: 4

Australia and Wales had already been guaranteed to advance, Fiji, Georgia, and Uruguay had already been eliminated.

But, with this result, Australia keeps alive the hope of being first, and Georgia can no longer come in third. Wales still play Uruguay, and a Wales win or draw (or even a loss with two bonus points) would put Wales on top of the pool. Uruguay need a win to come in third.

Ireland 26 - 5 Samoa at the half

Ireland have the bonus point, and also a red card. Samoa are already eliminated.

Ireland on track to qualify for knock-out stage, all they have to do is win the match now.

Ireland 47 - 5 Samoa

Table points in Pool A:

Ireland: 16
Japan: 14
Scotland: 10
Samoa: 5
Russia: 0

Ireland guaranteed to advance, although not necessarily in first place. Samoa have a lock on fourth, and Russia on fifth.

The rest is down to Japan v Scotland tomorrow. Scotland must win. If Japan lose, but score two bonus points, Japan take first place, Ireland second, and Scotland third. If Scotland win with no bonus point, but Japan take one bonus point, it is Ireland first, Japan second, Scotland third. If Scotland win with the bonus point, and Japan take one or zero bonus points, it is Ireland first, Scotland second, and Japan third. If Scotland win and neither team score a bonus point, then it is Ireland first, Scotland second, and Japan third.

In event of a draw or a Japan win, it is Japan first, Ireland second, Scotland third.
