Did another Der Spiegel soccer quiz, got 2 out 10 points. These are the ones I got right:

How many 1:5 defeats did Bayern München receive in the Bundesliga in the last 40 years before the one of last week?
Who was the goalkeeper who mangaged to kill two penalties in the English Premier League last weekend?

The rest, oh my...

Hertha at home to Leipzig tomorrow, always a great opportunity to get licked real bad. Fürth away to Sandhausen, which doesn't sound like much, but AFAICR we always played shite against them, even though at the moment they are five places and four points below us. So, no great expectations from this side of the Freedom Divide.

Hertha BSC 2 - 4 RB Leipzig

It's not that I'm not somehow fond of Leipzig (Ossis have to stick together, after all, even though I'm a Wessi, and Leipzig is the most hypercapitalist "club" of them all), but fuck. Fuck.Fuck

Played 74, won 39, drawn 13, lost 22.

Germany 4 - 0 Belorussian Soviet Republic

A little bit o' help from Norn Iron (goalless draw against them Kaaskoppen) means we are qualiied for Euro 2020 and can win the group if we win at at home the team that helped us. Yay.

It's something of a recurring theme between us and the Netherlands: They are at least as good as our boys yet end up losing the first match (2-3 in Amstardam); they humiliate us with a roaring second-half performance on the away leg (4 - 2); by all rights, the group victory should have been theirs and then they fail to score against Northern Ireland, who aren't cannon fodder but really no superteam either. Our boys won two-nil in Belfast and they are pedestrians, too.

Playing shite, yet winning. I like that more than the way the Dutch handle it.

Played 77, won 41, drawn 13, lost 23.

Yes. There was actually some fine football there. That has been rare those last two years.

Germany 6 - 1 Northern Ireland

Germany win the group (21 pts.), Nehterlands second at 19, Northern Ireland can still make the tournament via the playoffs in April.

Oh, not to forget:

Cyprus 1 - 2 Scotland

Scotland finish third in their group, with 15 pts. (2nd: Russia, 25..; 1st: Belgium, 30). They have a guaranteed playoff spot because they won their group in the third tier of the Nations League last year. Or something. Anyway, we can still hope for Scotland-Germany match at Euro 2020. Apparently, Scotland will be at home against one of Israel/Bulagria/Hungary/Romania and, provided they win, will tough it out against either Norway or Serbia. If they qualify, that will place them in pot 4 for the group draw.

Played 78, won 42, drawn 13, lost 23

The pots are interesting. Germany are in pot 1, as a group winner, and they will thus avoid the other 5 group winner teams in that pot: Belgium, England, Italy, Spain, Ukraine. That is nice enough. However, the other pots do not hold "easy" teams:
Pot 2: France, Poland, Switzerland, Croatia, Netherlands, Russia
Pot 3: Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Turkey, Austria, Czech Republic
Pot 4: Wales, Finnland and 4 teams yet to be qualified.

So on the one hand, we could end up facing France, Portugal and Wales in the group stage, or, on the other, Russia, Austria and, for example, Kosovo. These seem like very different tasks to me...

This is a very European thing, don't you think?

As I found out meanwhile, there won't be a Scottish/German group. Scotland is a host in this Byzantine tournament. The thing is, every participating team whose country is also a host gets at least two home matches - three if they are winners of their qualification groups. Thus, Germany get three home matches, all in Munich. Scotland, who are also a host (with Glasgow) will divert into a different group if they make the tournament.

For the non-European non-soccer folks here: The European Cup of next year (an analogue to the Gold Cup and the Copa America) will be the first and only one played in a multitude of European countries - as a celebration of Europe and its diversity, but also as a celebration of the Cup's 60th anniversary. The very European thing here is that the actual allocation of playing venues and group draws (24 teams qualify) was done by a team of expert European beaurocrats within the European Football Federation. You could argue that this is more of a Byzantine than a European thing, but that is beside the point. And the European Football Federation has Khazakhstan, Turkey, and Israel as members, so who is going to complain?

Closer to home, our Fürth boys play the Mighty Glubb from Nuremberg tomorrow. The entire family are holding their collective breaths.

Hertha two nil down at rhe half, and the goalie was sent off for a foul committed shortly before the second goal. And this is the last match against a team placed below us till Christmas.

It'll be along, dark teatime of the soul this season...

I recorded this but I doubt I’ll watch it since it has only got worse.

The one bright spot this weekend is

Hamilton 1 - 3 Rangers

Don't watch. Erase it, and hope for better times.

I think this will have been the last straw for our new coach. Who knows, maybe with the sudden wealth from our new super-rich investor we'll hire Mauricio Pochetino.

I watched ten minutes but it was already four nil so I did no harm. As long as you don’t nick Gerrard from us. He’ll go in a year or two but I’d like to keep him as long as possible. He’ll get Liverpool when Klopp goes to Die Mannschaft.
