Are redheads facing extinction?

Postby Candy » Mon Jul 11, 2005 7:46 pm

My grandmother sent me an article from the Lafayette Journal and Courier. I guess because I am a true redhead. It is titled "Are redheads facing extinction?" by Robin L. Flanigan. I can't find it on the Internet to provide a link.

If predictions by the Oxford Hair Foundation come to pass, the number of natural redheads everywhere will continue to dwindle until there are none left by the year 2100.

The reason, according to scientists at the independent institute in England, which studies all sorts of hair problems, is that just 4 percent of the world's population carries the red-hair gene. The gene is recessive and therfore diluted when carriers produce children with people who have the dominant brown-hair gene.

The gene responsible for redhair - known as the melanocortin 1 receptor, or MC1R - was only discovered in the late 1990's. People have a good chance of being born with red hair if they have a mutation of that gene.

Red hair is found in all ethnic backgrounds but is most commonly associated with people of Celtic descent.

From the article, they show a little 5 year old girl with redhair. The below is a quote from her mother.

"As a baby, we'd be in the store and people would always try to touch her head..."

This still happens to me today! Why are people so curious about redhair? Image

It's not because your hair is red, it's because your hair is pretty. ;)

Interesting. Pretty hair must be rare, because I've had my head touched 10 times this year by total strangers. They don't even ask. I tell others about it, and they think it is weird, too. 8)

Lance, photo's of true redheads. :)

Ok, I admit, I've touched a bald head. I did it for good luck. I asked first, though. :P

I don't think the gene would work its way out of the population entirely as long as redheads/those who carried the gene kept on breeding. I mean, sure, it's recessive, but that still, if I remember my high school biology properly, gives a 1/4 chance for any child to carry the gene. besides, since so many people (myself included!) find red hair more attractive, wouldn't they have a better shot at breeding anyway?

Men want to make babies with me all the time.

I've committed to keeping the dysfunction from continuing down another generation.

I went to Alaska for Christmas to meet an old boyfriend's family. We went over to meet with his best friend, who was a redhead. The best friend's sister was a redhead, too. These folks were super smart. Then I saw a family photo. The whole family had redhair (mom, dad, sister, brother). I can only imagine what Christmas dinner was like at that home. I imagine it like a discussion about Physics the whole night.

Thank you! Once at the store, I felt something in the back of my head. I turned around to see this lady pulling her hand away and smiling really big. Her immediate response was, "I just wanted to see if it was real."
