To My twin State Michigan

Postby Superluminal » Sat May 08, 2010 10:52 pm

My grandson recently brought from school a paper on the history of the Arkansas state flag. Something I either had forgotten or never knew: One of the two parallel stars just below the word Arkansas stands for the state of Michigan. The two states joined the union at nearly the same time and were considered twin states, and the designer of the Arkansas flag, miss Willie Hocker, wanted to commemorate that fact. How bout that?

Huh! Never heard that before. Interesting trivia - thanks, Super.
Is there such a thing?

I've been to 47 of the US states. Arkansas is not one of them. I'll have to remedy that.

That's nice. I've been to three:
California, Hawaii, and New York. Go figure.

Ah no, it' 4: I briefly touched Nevada, but that was only the town Beatty, Nevada, and what a shithole that was

Manitoba City, Saskatchewan City, Nunavut City, Vermont City, SOuth Vermont City, East Dakota City...

I had no idea we had a sister state.

Our flag has the catchy slogan, "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you." I ain't making that up. It doesn't mention Alabama.

Don't know so much about Alabama. Been to Bayminette, or is it Bay Minette? I see it is the latter. Spent a few days there on business, as a matter of fact.

Oh, and I am familiar with "Why don't you go back to your double-wide, and fry something?"

I have sort of been to Arkansas, I was driving in Memphis got lost and ended up going over the bridge into Arkansas. We drove for about a mile until we could get turned and back over the bridge. I was there for about five minutes but didn't get out the car.

I have been to DC and 23 states (excluding Arkansas), 24 if you include a change of planes in Chicago.

Despite several trips to the East Coast and being in every other state in New England we missed Rhode Island, though we saw it from the Interstate.

The Deep South is odd if you live in a very white country, not scary or threatening, just odd.

Could I be the only person here who's been to zero US states?

Arkansas, dear, not Ala-fuckin'-bama.

I didn't know we had a sister state, either. Or is that a sister in law state? Never been to Arkansas. Been to MI, Ohio (good place to drive through to get to somewhere else good), Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Florida, North and South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, Kansas, Texas, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Maryland and a brief stop in Trenton NJ to the train station.

And I don't think, Lianachan that you're the only one here who hasn't been to any states.

Other countries I've been in include Canada, Mexico, Chekslovakia (when it was a country), Romania.

OH geez, well, what do you expect when my napping schedule is screwed up. I started with Arkansas in my head and somehow connected to Alabama - it's the old lady's fault for making me watch the stupid Sweet Home Alabama movie with her.

I regret any inconvenience my temporary mental lapse has caused the fine people of Arkansas by my Alabama reference. If you are ever in Alabama, why not visit Bay Minette? They have an ice cream parlor at the smoke-free, alcohol-free bowling alley.

Heid, I have my own self crossed that very bridge into Arkansas, I'll wager. I spent a couple weeks in Memphis on business and found myself across the river, wondering how I managed to get there.

I suspect you might be, Halcyon Dayz is the only other regular poster I can think of who might not have been.

He's not a regular poster anymore, but I don't think Mickal555 has been to the states, either.

It's not a big deal, though. I've been to less than half of the states myself (17, actually, and that's even less impressive when you consider I live within 60 miles of 3 of those states other than the one where I reside.) The only other country I've been to is Canada, which is, according to Google maps, only about 6 and a half hour drive from me.

Could be longer, as neither American nor Canadian drivers seem to understand why the left lane is called the "passing lane". (Heid and Lianachan, substitute "left" for "right" :P)

Counting airport stops, I've been to 18 states, 19 if you count my home state. Again counting airport layovers, 14 countries and the territory of Guam.

Not sure, and can't speak to the competing pageants either.

But we are already hearing from the talk radio morons. The contest was fixed, this is yet another example of Islamo-pandering, etc etc.

One of these days I'm going to hop into the car and drive over there, and get you a nice new radio with a working tuner dial, so you can listen to something else :P

I've never been overseas either, if you don't count having been born in Japan.
