I think he actually said that England is a third world country. While he may have meant that in the ignorant England = the entire UK way that is so frustratingly common, it is still an important distinction to bear in mind.

I wasn't sure which he meant, and I changed the title from "England" to "Britain".

The best comment I have heard on this is:

"Religion should be like a penis, you don't make a fuss of it in public and you don't ram it down childrens' throats."

Edit: typo

That is eerily like something I used to say: "I don't mind you having a hard-on for God, just don't go poking it in my face".

I saw somebody refer to the Pope as "Pope-eye the Saviour Man", which amused me.

Cardinal Walter Kasper reportedly told a German magazine the UK was marked by "a new and aggressive atheism".

Hmm. Kasper the unfriendly holy ghost must be referring to me. "New and aggressive" I suppose refers to the fact that I can speak my mind without fear of being tortured until I recant, then burned alive. (Ah, the good old days.)

Of course, I live in Canada, but we are still part of the Commonwealth.

Yes Kasper had a diplomatic illness and failed to make the trip. I recall you having Scottish ancestry so you have a dog in this fight. :D

The Pope Godwins the religious debate.

His main problem with our "aggressively secular" society is that we don't want his organisation to be able to discrminate against the GLBT community, and we would prefer his organisation to obey the laws of the country. Oh, and we really, really would have liked him personally not to have covered up for paedophiles.

And another daft old man we could do without, Phil the Greek.

At least we don't have Berlusconi.
