Caught up with my supervisor this afternoon - he just got back from 6 months sabbatical in Geneva doing something at WHO. I have been emailing him my draft chapters all the while. He had given me fairly comprehensive comments on the concept chapter but nothing on the lit review chapter, and now I'm half way through the research method chapter. 7 and a half months to go until submission deadline.

Quake strain relief cracks in a nearby building support pillar next to my workstation on the ground floor of a 5 story building. These cracks appeared in the big shake on 16 August 2013. I'm comforted by email assurances from the people who know, that these superficial cracks are nothing to worry about.

In the bottom photo, the crack radiating down from the corner of the junction sure looks like a stress point to me.
No trees were killed in the posting of this message.

Full disclosure: I have never been in a graduate program, I only got to see the study carrels when I visited a cousin employed at the library as an undergraduate. I really did get the feeling that I was visiting a prison.

Its now 3:21 pm - I've been back in the cubby hole since 10.00am hunched over my 3rd draft chapter, and have only just checked the cracks. No visually detectable change apparent to my bleary eyes.
