The fucking BBC, political bias this time

An independent, year long study conducted by a Scottish university has proven that the BBC have been biased towards the NO side of the Scottish independence debate.

It's not news to those of us who have been watching their behaviour, but it's good to have actual evidence. Unsurprisingly, this has not been widely reported in the Scottish media. The BBC, for which all of us in the UK are forced to pay, is bound by a charter and supposed to be politically neutral. Pah.

End of report wrote:So, on the objective evidence presented here, the mainstream TV coverage of the first year of the independence referendum campaigns has not been fair or balanced. Taken together, we have evidence of coverage which seems likely to have damaged the Yes campaign.

Story here, actual report (if anybody is sufficiently interested) is here.

The BBC is a foreign-owned TV corporation

Wow, looks like I can vote if I establish residence.

I looked for some polls, they are mostly showing that the referendum will result in a "no" vote, although one of them is showing things a bit tighter.

But, from what I can tell, it seems like this referendum has no legal force - is that accurate?

The polls are all pretty loaded, and reflect the desired result of whoever commissioned them. Pro-independence polls tend not to be widely reported (see opening post!). Regarding legality, the UK and Scottish governments have an agreement about the referendum. Warning, that link is only for those who love legalese.

For appropriate definitions of "correct".

Having listened to BBC Radio Scotland in the car on the way in to work this morning, and again on the way to and from a meeting, I feel I should point out that the bias there seems to be even worse. It's not included in that study, however.

Interesting blog from a former BBC journalist about their response to that report. Astonishing.

Indeed. Sorry, Мастер, about the brevity of my response - but there's not really much more to say about it.

But the Guardian was amongst the first journals to support criticism of authoritarian government!

I complained to the BBC about one of their political interviews, and I received a response today (which I guess is a standard one as it didn't respond to anything specific I said) which included this hilarious line:

We believe the BBC's coverage of the Scottish Referendum debate has been fair and impartial

Still up to their old tricks. The guy who wrote that is a former UK ambassador, too - albeit a pro-independence type and decent chap.

So, last I heard, the polls were showing a pretty-close-to-even outcome?

I'm pretty sure I could do at least one post a day that highlights BBC shenanigans in the independence debate, but I'm not sure I can be arsed. Here's one from today, though.

Not exactly the BBC but they broadcast the interview and have put the quote on their website. In the debate about whther women should serve in combat rôles in the Army:
"It's pretty much down to a woman that we are not speaking Latin today," she said, referring to Boudicca, queen of the Iceni people of eastern England, who led a major uprising against Roman forces almost 2,000 years ago."
Cheers Boudicca, thanks for keeping Caledonia free from the Garlic Munchers.

She did double down with the classic female excuse for being shite:
"You've got to work twice as hard to be considered half as good."

I've only just noticed this. Is that the same Boudicca who was defeated by Gaius Suetonius Paulinus? Does the interviewee think that all "Romans" went around speaking Latin or, as you suggest, that her little revolt had much significance up here?

More firmly linked to the BBC - interesting article about what a shower of bastards they are when it comes to Scotland.

(From a website I normally cannot abide, but that article is dead on the money)
