Gagarin Way

Postby Heid the Ba » Tue Apr 15, 2014 10:56 am

I missed Gagarin Day at the weekend but this morning I drove past Gagarin Way named after everyone's favourite cosmonaut.
Get it up ye.

Didn't know he had a road named after him in Fife. Very cool!

Sir, I'll see your Gagarin and raise you one Ziolkovski and a Lilienthal right next to him.

That is cool. Lumphinnnans doesn't beat Potsdam at anything, you have a Brandenburg Gate and Sanssouci, Lumpinnans has a corner shop and a post box. Even if you add in Lochgelly and Cowdie I still think you have it beaten.

All we have up here are two towns named after the Offical Worst Briton of the 18th Century.

Just checked to see if Lumphinnans has anything going for it archaeologically. Fuck all.

Nothing going for it at all. Just a typical wee village, a shop, a pub, two boarded up shops, a Chinese carry out, a bowling club, a primary school, a war memorial and a kirk, old houses on the main road, newer houses off that, and street names "Pit" and "Foundry" to remind them of long gone industry. I suspect the lack of archaeological importance doesn't weigh heavily on the population.

It always pisses me off that these lists of "Britons" are always lists of English with no acknowledgement that these islands weren't always one country.

Feel free to nominate someone from Scotland for the worst Briton of the century :)

I would nominate Robert III for the C14th but as a Scottish king he apparently isn't eligible. (See also: current Betty as Elizabeth II.)

Wow. When the name Mosley came up, I found myself thining, "well, they're to be envied if their worst person of the century is a greedy, power-hungry lawyer with a penchant for fast cars and Nazi uniform BDSM". I'm an uneducated, history challenged clod, it appears.
