I think the UK single had an English language A side and a German B side, the French one was a French A side and English B side, etc, etc... Some sort of web of different language combinations in different countries. Cool!

Sorry, but in '84 I REALLY hated that song. It was the time when all the cool people at school listened to shit like this, and I HAD to hate in order to dissociate maself from them. Of course, I've grown mellower, and can even bear to see old classmates at reunions, but come on. Red balloons causing WWIII.

The English lyrics are different from the German ones, I don't even think it's the same story. Maybe you should try just the first link....

Total tripe. WWIII is going to start when someone with a vaguely Islamic sounding name uses a mobile phone to report that his car had a blow out.

It's a similar story. In the German version, the balloons are released and thought to be UFOs. The military investigates and sees what they really are and decides to have some fun shooting them down. This causes tension in the border countries and... WWIII

In the English version they are picked up by NORAD and "bugs in the software" mistake them for a nuclear first strike, against which there is immediate retaliation and... WWIII

I don't think the balloons are red in the German version, just toy balloons.

Too bad we don't have anyone who can speak both German and English around here to corroborate or correct me.

And though I've loved the song for over 30 years, until watching the videos recently I had NO FREAKING IDEA she was so hot. OMFG!

:D

I think "red" is just to make the English-language version fit the rhythm better. The German already has an extra syllable, if it were just "ninety-nine balloons", it would have two more syllables than the English.

So just watch the video with the volume turned off :)

Yep, tough luck. The German word for a small toy balloon filled with whatever gas is in them is Luftballon (=air balloon), with the stress on Luft. You can use just "Ballon", thereby freeing one syllable, but by the pitfalls of German declension, that is almost no use at all: Since Ballons is plural, almost any adjective would have to have two syllables: Rote, blaue, whatever-e, pronounced like somewhat like "-uh" in English. So the unnecessary "Luft" fits the rhytm, while no adjective does, hence no colour:

NOy-nunn-noyn-tsig LOOft-bull-ongs...
NInety->Nine red balloons...

Yeah, she's hot, but I always hated that chewinggummy voice of hers. Want a real hot German rock valkyrie with a voice to blow you away ? Here goes

Are there any female German singers who are NOT called Nina, Nena or some variety thereof?
