I like potato chips - crisps to the transpondians. As usual I like them plain, not barbecue or dill pickle flavor.

Back in my college days - long about 1965 or 1966 - I had a fraternity brother who had a side business delivering potato chips. He was a Charles Chips man. Charles Chip had delivery vans and sold potato chips and pretzels direct to consumers, delivered to the home. The chips came in a large decorated tin, I think it was a pound.



They were good chips too. I lived in a dorm, and we had our chips man delivering to the dorm. next thing you know, our whole floor is ordering, then it spread throughout the dorm.

At the time we probably spent too much time, um... expanding our consciousness, which caused desires for snack food. We ate a lot of chips.

Eventually that business model didn't play out and the Charles Chips folks quit delivery.

Today you can buy nostalgia reproductions of the tins. And a California company makes chips under the name, but they are not the same chips.

But the giant tin of chips is still a fond memory some 50 years later.

I've never encountered a dill pickle flavour, but it sounds nice! We have a vast assortment of flavours, and one of the favourite complaints of An Englishman Abroad is that you can't get proper flavours of crisps, only bleedin' paprika or something.

I like a lot of the flavors. Plain are still the best but I can occasionally enjoy the Sour Cream and Onion, or BBQ (spicy, not sweet), and the Dill flavor is awesome when you can find it. Lime is a recent addition to the flavor line up, and is far better than you'd think. I don't think I've ever seen Paprika flavored.

Lime is good, honey mustard also good.

Paprika flavour is extremely popular in G'many, and yeah, I prefer the English way of having endless variety, one more artificial than the other. I could kill a fly for Salt&Vinegar.

Some of the lower tier chip makers have a series of flavors that seems to move around different makers over years. SUch flavors as steak and onions or hot dogs with mustard. And frankly, given the premise, I do taste a grilled steak taste in the former. SNyders makes this array of flavors for a year or two, then they drop it and some other company, etc etc.

Recently biggie Frito-Lay has come out with oddball flavors, and made a competitive thing of it. SO we have sriracha flavor, chicken and waffles flavor, chipotle flavor, wasabi, and I can't remember them all. OH here, I looked it up.

"Do Us A Flavor" Contests
Lay's has occasionally solicited new flavor ideas through its "Do Us a Flavor" promotions.

The 2013 contest produced three new flavors: sriracha, chicken and waffles, and cheesy garlic bread. Cheesy garlic bread was chosen as the winner and was added to the lineup, however the other flavors remain on sale in some regions.

Another round of 'Do Us a Flavor' was launched in 2014. The flavors included Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese, Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger, Wavy Mango Salsa, and Cappuccino. Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger was chosen as the winner.

The 2015 finalists include Kettle Cooked Greektown Gyro, New York Reuben, Southern Biscuits & Gravy, and Wavy West Coast Truffle Fries. Southern Biscuits & Gravy was crowned the winner.

The 2016 'Do Us a Flavor' was rebranded 'Passport to Flavor' for the 2016 Summer Olympics. The four finalists were Chinese Szechuan Chicken, Greek Tzatziki, Brazilian Picanha, and Indian Tikka Masala.

The 2017 contest produced three flavors: Crispy Taco, Everything Bagel with Cream Cheese, and Fried Green Tomato.

Kettle cooked sea salt & balsamic vinegar. I always go for the kettle cooked when they have them. Thicker & crunchier.
