Base thoughts

Here in the USA, everyone knows baseball, whether they follow it or not. But baseball metaphors find their way into everyday life.

One such is "getting to first base", or "getting to second base" in the dating world. Second base being, say, getting under the bra.

But it occurs to me that in some lands, where soccer is king, the game is not so incremental as baseball, and so the base metaphor doesn't work. I could see maybe some application of "I got a red card last night", but am unsure of that. SO in places like, oh I don't know, Sudan, Myanmar, Albania, Terabithia, the dating pressures are likely similar.

SO in those places and places like them, where do young hopefuls "get to"?

Sarah Millican, a Geordie comedienne, has a routine about how comprehensively influenced by US movies she was as a teenager that ends with the line "so when the gym teacher was teaching us to play softball and told me to go to third base I wanked him off . . ."

Terabithia? Would the equivalent metaphor be "get across the creek?"

I think getting yourself a "sticky wicket" is probably a good thing.

well, since the "first base, second base" etc. thing is used as descriptive stages of sexual contact, and simultaneously represents stages of scoring in baseball, it would seem that for another sport to be used in the same manner, the sport would need to have specific, quantifiable and identifiable stages to secure a 'score'. And while some sports do have stages towards winning (game, set, match for example), I can't think of another sport that has stages of a single score that have to be achieved. Doesn't mean there isn't one, just that I can't see one. (yeah, for example, American football has 'downs', but you don't need to achieve a 2nd down in order to score).

It's actually a bad thing since it makes batting more difficult.

I can't think of anything with a progression, as wring says. I have heard of getting someone pregnant despite taking precautions as "slipping one past the goalie".

But in a situation where you're getting your wicket sticky, do you really want your balls whacked?
