World Cup 2018

Postby Lianachan » Thu Jun 07, 2018 12:08 pm

This tournament is almost upon us, starting a week today. Not many of the national teams of our esteemed board members will be participating, but the absence of Scotland is something Heid and I will be well used to by now (and it doesn't dampen my enthusiasm for the competition).

I will instead be supporting:

Iceland - closest cultural match for me from the participating countries, tiny nation and total underdogs.
Brazil - went to see them in the 1998 world cup, and have always liked them.
Germany - solidarity, brother. Also, England hate them.
Argentina - England hate them.
Anybody who plays against England.

Other fixtures will provide a team to root for on a game by game basis through a complicated framework of irrational reasons in a process which all sports fans will be familiar with.

Sounds fine to me, apart from Brazil. The media love them too much and talk about Samba Fitba’ even when the Brazilians are cynically kicking people and diving.
Get it up ye.

Totally with you, although, of course, everything is toatally 'Schland for me. I see a possible Germany-England matchup in the quarterfinals, so we'll probably have some fun together I'd stop hating them if they did, but, alas... This year, there will be goal-line technology, so no 1966, and no 2010, either.

I'll absolutely love Iceland until we meet them. Else, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, France - I see them relatively unemotionally. It's all the same stew of perfect ball control, tactical discipline, high pressing, physical prowess, fast running , well-hidden fouls and theatrical diving (they all play in the CL, don't they) anyway, so they are the teams to beat, period.

No mercy on the DDD though. Of course.

I've removed Spain from my list of teams to automatically support, due to their activities relating to Catalonia. Yup, I get what you're saying about Brazil but I've liked them since I was a wee laddie. Back when they were good!

Of course, you realise that if they end up playing against England then I'm afraid it's pizza for me.

ETA - I thought DDD was a reference to Italy. No, I don't know why either. So, substitute "pizza" above for.... for.... I dunno. Glasses of port I suppose.

I'll be rooting for Germany, Mexico, and against any team favored by my wife due to the aesthetic qualities of their jerseys.

My luck with these things is such that I'll probably just keep Nigeria and Tunisia for the Grand National as well.

Normally these games don't matter much but in this case the winner gets to set US foreign policy for the next year.

Russia 5 - 0 Saudi Arabia

So uncle Volodya it is. Don't worry, he'll do the job fine. He managed Donalds campaign, so he is well-versed in these things.

Yes, and my bill for the evening was 5-0-0.
