Crop Marks

Postby Lianachan » Tue Jul 17, 2018 10:14 am

The prolonged dry spell in the UK (and Ireland) has been great for cropmarks this year. Cool stuff being revealed all over the place.

Now all they have to do is figure out how to genetically modify the crops so they can use this feature in non-dry years. ;)

Oh cool, from the title I thought I would be reading about crop circles and such things. This is way cooler. I love this stuff. I find similarly interesting things like ancient river paths. The river patterns through what is now the Sahara fascinate me. But here in glacial USA we also find old pre-glacial river patterns under the soil. Every now and then some ancient city emerges from the dimness of time via such things.

Old river routes are showing up here too, sometimes extremely clearly. Not as interesting to me as the archaeology, but all helps create a picture of the past landscape.

Potentially, depending on what it’s under.

We noticed this phenomenon at a cemetery we drove through today (playing Pokémon). It was interesting to see the outlines of each individual vault. Then we drove through a pristine area with no graves and noticed a rather large, unusual shape in the grass. We have no idea what's underneath there but we didn't have a lot of time to investigate either. Maybe we'll go back tomorrow and check it out.
