So watching a lot of American football - it's the playoffs.
Modern goal posts are sturdy steel pipe, but when I was of college age, the goal posts were simple H-shaped affairs made of wood. And tradition was, after the game we ran on the field and tore them down, and broke them up for keepsakes. My alma mater Michigan State Univ went to the Rose Bowl new years day 1966, and I was there. Somewhere around I still have a piece of those goal posts.

When I was young, football (or “soccer” to many of you) goal posts were wooden things of square cross-section. They are now generally hollow circular metal tubes. This not only means they’re lighter, but also means that when the ball hits one and bounces off it it does so in a way it wouldn’t have done 30 years ago.

Our metal pole goal posts, when hit by a pointy football make a nice resonant "thung" sound.
