Resolved: Location field

Resolved: Location field

Postby umop ap!sdn » Sat Apr 22, 2006 9:43 pm

[RESOLVED]
Something weird is going on with my location field. From time to time, for no apparent reason, various characters appear before the degrees symbol - first it was a B, then an O, and just today I found an A with a circumflex accent. I keep having to go into my user CP and fix it. Is there perhaps a boâ loose on the board leaving subliminal messages for us all?

I've seen things show up in sigs, too. Typically, the Å (or was it Â) is showing up before the ` character. I have no idea why this is happening. In the two sigs I kept noticing it in, I replaced the ` with ' and they've been working fine.

What's a boâ?

Must have something to do with ASCII codes greater than 127. *shrug*

I think a boâ is a species of snâke.

Twit. Yeah, that's whan comes to mind... You're a twit.

See if you can keep an eye out for some event that preceeds the change. You may have noticed I put some test characters in my sig.

Yeah, I had the same problem with my ' as well. I Am He also had had similar problems with his sig.

Both mine and I Am He's seem to be better, now, though.

Yeah, your two are the ones I was talking about. I edit yours, MM_Dandy, to replace the ` characters with ' characters. I Am He's sig still changes by itself. He uses the "middle dot" (·) character.

That's funny, I don't remember putting ` in my sig at all.

*sigh*

Never mind.

We just need to try and look for an event that heralds the change, then look and see if the change happened to everyone at the same time.

Not to nitpick, but it would be a genus.

The expression not to nitpick seems to mean something special to you.

I was able to reproduce the problem.

The extra characters are added when I restore a backup of the user table to the database. They don't exist in the backup, but get added at the time of the restore.

Hmmm...

Okay, I got it. I don't know why it's happening but it has something to do with editing the sql backup files in Notepad2 and then restoring them. I can reliably recreate the problem and I now know how to avoid it.

Well cool, I did not know that. :D

What a great surprise. I clicked it, then download manager opened, and told me it was downloading Shotgun.wav, and it opened a media player of some sort. I then - lightning quick I am - surmised I needed to turn on the audio, at which point I was able to hear it go bang once I hit the play button again.

This is what happens when we outsource our drummer jobs for remote rim shots.

I think your genus point was specious.
