Languages

Let me know if something is not working, or you think something could be made better.

Languages

Postby Мастер » Tue Aug 28, 2007 4:03 am

Is there a reason we've got every language except English disabled in the profile settings? Some other boards that seem to be using the same (or similar) software have what looks like several dozen languages available.

No biggie (certainly I wouldn't do anything if it involved work), just wondering...

I've just never installed any. They aren't disabled, they just aren't there at all.

If I were to install languages now, any modification that I've installed that changes the language files might not work right in the new language.

I'd be willing to give it a shot if you like. What language would you like me to try first?

Oh, I might try German or Russian if it were available. But don't try it if it is more than a token amount of work, I'd just be trying them for fun. I'm reasonably functional in English :P (I hope nobody disagrees with that...)

I disagree - you're extremely functional in English. At least as much so as I am.

How the heck did English get to be my first language? I feel so dirty....

Okay, I think they're installed.

Have fun.

Let me know if they work okay.

I wish I spoke another language fluently. All I've got is English, and enough Spanish to get me in trouble.

Wow. When I set it for Russian, one of the first things in the top left is (in English):

Welcome Back hrushchev's Other Shoe

:P

Llance, are the mods something that are reasonably human readable? Maybe I could take a stab at improving some of them? It it's a lot of work, though, I suspect neither one of us will want to go that far...

They are, but they get installed into the board's runtime files. Once installed, you'd have to go through each one to see if it modifies the language files and then manually edit the alternative languages.

I'm not sure, but I think it would be a big deal.

Yeah, that's what happens. Any variables that are original will work. Anything that has been modified won't, because the language files don't have translations for them.

If you want to PM me an email address, I'll send you a few files to mess around with.

OK, this is weird. I currently have the board language set to Russian, and there is a distinctly Russian character right smack in the middle of the German word on my screen. Does it look OK to you folks when I quote it back?

OK, I switched back to English, and it looks OK. The letter in question is "ä," which turns into "д" (sounds like a "d") when the language is set to Russian. Also, I am realizing for the first time that most of the menu items I listed a few posts ago appear as total gibberish when the board language is set to English :P

You might try switching your skin to the "Illuminati" skin, instead of "Illuminati Portal". See if that's any better.

Sounds like a character set encoding issue.

FWIW, I can tell ya from personal experience that Firefox works just fine under Linux. I like it a lot better than any of the default browsers, and it offers the advantage of not having to become accustomed to something new.
