Watched this on Amazon Video, having never heard of it.

A 2017 German film, set in Germany in the closing stages of the Second World War and based on the quite extraordinary true story of the exploits of Willi Herold (a story I wasn’t aware of, either).

It’s very good indeed.

Oddly, on Amazon it had a length of 4 hours..... but the (black and white) film ended after 2 hours.... and then started again in colour. I really liked the black and white, whole thing is beautifully shot. I’ll go back for the colour version some time.

It’s not very cheery, but it’s a great film. Yes, story is terrible. From what I’ve read subsequently, film seems pretty accurate in general.

Earlier this year, some anti-fascists were demonstrating and they were attacked by what the BBC described as “anti-anti-facists”. I’m sure there must be a shorter way of saying that....

Now watching in fabulous colour-o-vision.

Still a great film. Watching with my film student son, who is infuriatingly knowledgeable about films and film making. Wondering what he'll make of it.

It’s done. Well.... the boy had no knowledge of the history, so I filled him in. He appreciated the film purely from that perspective. But, he also loved the actual film itself (no matter the subject matter) for various technical reasons I’ve had too much whisky to remember, let alone mention here.
