Listening to 70s and 80s music in my misspent youth, my favourite performers were disproportionately British. I mean, nearly all of them.
But there was one group that came into prominence during this time, that I absolutely loved, and that I always believed were very distinctly American.
They were the folks from the Rhode Island School of Design. I thought (and still do think) that they were off-the-charts awesome. None other than - the Talking Heads!
The most distinctly American sound in my largely British playlist, back when playlists were constructed by manually stacking vinyl discs on a primitive electro-mechanical device.
Quite recently, I learned that arguably the head Head, David Byrne, was born in Scotland.
Still love them, I was just surprised to learn this. I always thought they were wholly and completely American.
