Hobbitmania

Great song? Good show? Bad movie? What should be enjoyed and what should be avoided.

Should Naz have been given a role in "The Hobbit"?

Well one of my surf bands is called "Gollum's RING", but all I can conjure up today is this thorny question?

Naz - where are you now? (You should have been in Wellington yesterday methinks - you might've stolen the show)

I read The Hobbit about 35 years ago. It was one of the 3 or 4 books I've ever read for entertainment.

I'm a bit of a Tolkienologist. I've read almost everything he's ever written, most of it several times - so I'm not a huge fan of the films, and the latest one makes me want to punch Peter Jackson in the face. I mainly read non-fiction though, even for entertainment.

Yeah if he was going to re-make the hobbit, he should've done a proper job of it and included brown hobbits and a whole sub-commentary about brown and white hobbit relations and called the movie "The Brown Hobbit"

Absolutely. He should then be allowed to direct the next James Bond film, and I think that to avoid sexism, racism, ageism and anti-Americanism he should cast Whoopi Goldberg as Bond. If she can do it from a wheelchair, then so much the better.

I saw The Hobbit last night, although it is non-stop action nothing actually happens in it.

Oh, and while you're on the giant fucking eagles just fly to Mordor and drop the ring in the volcano.
Get it up ye.

It's like watching somebody playing a video game of a shite action film.

Very well put. It is about 30 years since I read the book but I have no idea how they think there is enough in it for three films.

Not a real question, but it does grate. As does the fact that the hero can nick a gold ring without a backwards glance.

So its really an amoral story about the struggle between good and evil?

So its an amoral parable about the struggle between multinational corporate evil and how it chooses to do what it wantsies?

Remarkably, it manages to resemble the book even less than the first film did. I wonder what the third one will be like. It's reached the stage where I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if the Battle of the Five Armies is replaced with a monster truck rally.

I haven't seen any such film, it sounds like we are talking about Part I, Part II, and Part III, not remakes, right?

New hobbit movie idea:-

The Brown Hobbit.

(Focusses on the downtrodden side of middle-earth. Enter the world of brown hobbits, who go about their daily petty lives amidst displays of prejudice and racism, reflecting disparaging aspects of the oppressed classes, minority cultures, sub- and counter cultures, criminal classes, failures and hacks, while the storybook scenes occasionally feature in background or back-of-stage screen shots)

I like it. Throw in some thuggish immigrant-accent-laden east-ender diction, mispronunciation of words, out-of-place metaphors, and clear misunderstanding of context.

Hobby Movie number 6 critical review. Yawn! - you've seen one hobbit movie, you've seen 'em all.
